3 Retro Throwbacks Worth Your Time

My name's Christopher Were, I'm going to be creating video related articles for GOL which explores what Linux can offer when it comes to gaming. Linux distributions have come very far as a desktop platform and I'll be seeing how the underdog of desktop OSes lines up against the corporate giants.

Today I would like to share with you three retro throwbacks which I think are worth taking a look at. Out of all the games I could have possibly chosen to look at, each one had to fit into the following criteria:

1. The game has to be open-source
2. Has to be a clone of an existing retro game
3. Has to be built from scratch

The first game I'll to bring to the table is Open Sonic. The PC port of the original is not well know, but I can assure you it does exist. This iteration brings not only the speed and fast pace we know and love from the franchise but also a new degree of strategy in how levels are completed.

The second game I chose was Freedoom. I think there's a lot of fun in playing a game where you can pull off a phenomenally high FPS, resulting in a very tight and reactive gaming experience along side gameplay mechanics which don't require too much thought.

Finally the final game I present to you is OpenTTD. An open-source clone of the classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe. There aren't many transport management games which are as quick and easy to pick up as this. It's not too complicated yet keeps you on your toes. This is one of my personal favourites.

Each game can be found on their respective websites:

Good video, well put together, and very enjoyable to watch!

I'd not heard of openttd before, but I see it's in Arch's community repository, so I'll have to check that out. :D

Great games, specially openTTD (I enjoyed). I had been playing on linux for some years, and this is one of the best. Now with steam, desura... they less people will play them. It's a shame.

I knew about OpenTTD and FreeDoom but I am going to look at Open Sonic to play with my daughter.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe has been one of my favourite games since it came out nearly 20 years ago, I still have the original box & disks from when I bought it in 1995, the nights I sat up playing that game only to have to go to work a couple of hours later with no sleep, aaah those were the days. :D

Nice video, good work indeed!

But surely that open Sonic game can't possibly be legal?

Perhaps that's why they started working on OpenSurge as a replacement, same game but without all the Sega branded content.
