Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is now in Open Beta for Linux!

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters the ARPG that draws from Little Red Riding Hood is now in Open Beta for Linux! Sadly it's not going very smoothly and I am not impressed so far.

Public Beta

Starting with this release, the client goes public and will use the same servers as the windows and mac client. Your games characters will be available on any platform but characters from the private beta are now unavailable.

Fullscreen Warning

In some cases fullscreen mode will set the resolution higher than your display can handle. Please ensure that you have the proper GPU driver and display detected correctly. If you have a problem, simply remove "config/unity3d/SpicyHorse/Akaneiro/prefs" in your directory and play in windowed mode.

They don't list where to get the launcher on the official website just yet, you need to follow this link to actually get a hold of it. Their press release email also had multiple spelling errors I needed to correct.

Unfortunately the launcher while downloading is extremely crash happy for me on Ubuntu 13.04, I have submitted the bug report to them so hopefully they will get on it ASAP.

If you have as much trouble as I did downloading then follow PencilAbuser's advice from my reddit post:

The Register button also seems to do a total of nothing so you can sign up here for an account. Their sign up link as actually hidden on their website, I only found it by pressing the "Play (in web browser)" button.

The launcher has crashed less for me by unchecking the "enable uTP" box in the settings menu.  Still crashes but not as quickly! :P

Why exactly?
I don't use bin distros. While i have no problem with non open source software that much, i do have issue with bin distributions, which expect fixed OS.

Installation went flawlessly on Debian SID, although the Register button doesn't work. Also, after getting into the game tutorial it stalls loading. Good work on the launcher, it seems very well crafted, despite the mentioned issues on some systems.

I'm amazed at the number of new games getting fullscreen right. Multimedia controls, Alt-Tab switch, activities overview, all working. Same with the Double Fine titles.

I've played it a bit and works very well, nice graphics, smooth, it seems a game fitted for casual play. Push the graphic level to best for more detail. I don't like the paying model, I think it's paying for progressing in the game, that's the only downfall so far.

Not with Psychonauts they don't. Still, do these titles use SDL2? I had heard that it has a lot of those kinds of fixes.

I haven't tried the latest Psychonauts update just yet, and yes, the other Double Fine games use SDL2. The other games getting it right are usually Unity3D games, like this one. Something so obvious but it never worked well on most games.

Well, no F2P models are really very good.  You essentially have "pay-to-win" and "pay-or-grind".  The former is distasteful to the extent of being, in my opinion, Bad For Games(TM).  The latter is the only viable one, while somewhat annoying, though I wonder about it's sustainability.  In this case, you grind for karma gems, and upon earning enough, you unlock new areas (ostensibly, advancing the story).  Alternately, you pay real currency (for gems?) and advance more quickly, but without levelling more quickly (though, buying better gear & skills may help with that as well, but with level caps, the "pay-to-win" is, I believe, totally nerfed).

The problem, which is not one for us gamers, is that the heaviest users of the service, grinding players on a tighter budget, are also contributing the least funds.  Users interested in progressing more rapidly, by dodging the grind, are the ones that actually support the studio.  There must be some kind of tricky balance here, which, if upset, makes the game a financial disaster.  I assume there will be loads of DLC's, as time goes, to entice players.

I wish that the install/play experience was more homogenous;  there's clearly a wide variety of experiences, ranging from my flawless one to Liam's great annoyance (for example).  The game is a lot of fun (in the ARPG formula of "click, click, loot, yeah!" which Torchlight nailed so well), and for my part, I'm happy to have supported it.

That said, I see myself firing up my main Gentoo rig in a month or so when my home office is ready, doing my "emerge world", only to find Akaneiro completely broken & join the grumpy camp! :P

Running it from the terminal, i got this error:
