AMD's Mantle May Still Come To Linux, Despite Other Websites Reports

By - | Views: 19,997

It seems a tweet from Michael Marks the development director at porting house Aspyr Media has been taken out-of-context by another well known Linux website, time to clear things up.

Mantle is the new API from AMD developed as an alternative to OpenGL and Direct3D, for those that didn't know.

Here's the tweet in question:

@NThibieroz @FiraxisGames sadly no mantle for SteamOS either, but @grahamsellers will enable #BeyondEarth on AMD linux

— michael_marks (@michael_marks) April 13, 2014

Now, bear in mind this is specifically talking about the new Civilization game that is coming to Linux, it cannot support Mantle on Linux/SteamOS since Mantle isn't yet on Linux.

This will also help clear it up:

@oscarbg81 @michael_marks @FiraxisGames @amd_roy "AMD is actively evaluating other platforms to bring Mantle to". :)

Nick Thibieroz (@NThibieroz) April 14, 2014

That tweet is directly from Nick Thibieroz the Gaming Engineering Manager for AMD.

I hope this clears any confusion up. Mantle isn't even that big of a deal anyway, since it currently will only support AMD hardware which has a bad history on Linux, and AMD, Intel & Nvidia all talked about unlocking 15x more performance with OpenGL anyway, so Mantle seems like a wasted effort.

This debate is quite interesting, but it has the bitter taste of trolling in it and it's not quite on topic anymore either. If you wish to continue discussing this, please consider starting a forum thread about it.

I think AMD should sell off their GPU section, and just stick to CPUS. At least they do that right.

In 2009, when the brand-new laptop I'd bought had its ATI chip declared "legacy" by ATI, I vowed to never buy another ATI graphics card again. I have been true to that vow. Hell, even the justly-despised Intel graphics have better GNU/Linux support than ATI, still.

I think I mentioned about staying on topic earlier... We are talking about Mantle, not AMD's hardware.

AMD at the moment lack in CPU horse power and are great in gpu, if they sell the gpu section i don't know if they can compete anymore...

Because these comments just can't stay on topic and I fear that the trolling of AMD users will continue, I will now close the comments for this article. If you feel like I am violating your freedom of speech or you wish to continue the discussion, please start a thread on the forum.
