Don't Buy Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Yet

By - | Views: 15,561

A warning to remind you not to buy Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition on Steam until the Linux version is out, as a developer tweeted it will not be a Steamplay title due to their contract. Although a newer tweet sent to us seems it may change.

Steamplay is where you buy once and get access to all platforms on Steam, but it's entirely optional.

If you remember Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is confirmed for Linux and should be worked on after the next major patch is released.

The problem right now is this tweet:

@brouberol Due to our overly complex contract, no #Linux and #PC will have to be separate purchases.

— Trent Oster (@TrentOster) April 6, 2013

The developer tweeted this to us after we asked for some clarification:

@gamingonlinux @brouberol we are in the midst of sorting out our Steam relationship.

— Trent Oster (@TrentOster) July 5, 2014

So, it may change, but it may not.

A final tweet noted this:

@gamingonlinux @brouberol I can't say for sure yet, we're still working on it.

This is why contracts suck being stuck into crappy deals which could sting some people who supported you. I know for a fact this has already stung a few people who purchased it not knowing it wouldn't be a Steamplay title. While you should never assume anything things like this annoy me, as it's just a money grab by who their contract is with.

We always tell you not to buy anything until the Linux version is actually out, and this is yet another reason why you should wait.

It has always been possible, other games have done it. Steamplay is optional and not a requirement.

I hate when people say "PC" when they mean "Windows".

Surprised to know that it's even possible ! Do we have any example of games which need separate purchases ?

Same. I can't tell if it's ignorance, or if they just do it because "everybody does it". :(

Here's a big one: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214630/

Call of duty Mac edition...it cannot connect with Windows players online either, and online is the biggest part of those games.

Can I see any example? I have never seen any Linux game without steamplay, it will probably be the first one.
I hope they will support it, steamplay is why steam is great.

I just saw the example. Interesting.

I bought it back in October on the promise of Linux version "coming soon", so they can be sure I won't be buying it again, I'd rather wait for a GOG version in that case.

Add me to the list of people who didn't think that was possible.

Also, add me to the list of people who think that shouldn't be possible. By law.
