Dying Light Patch Released, Our Thoughts On It, Still Terrible

Techland has begun their patching of Dying Light for Linux & Windows in their effort to clean up the rather botched release, and we took a look.

I personally supplied rather a lot of feedback to them on my support ticket, and they have been pretty responsive with their feedback to me, and this was a good sign from the start.

They have added in V Sync which was missing from the Linux graphics options originally, so that's nice to see, as it's something I mentioned to them that was missing. Sadly, the Motion Blur option still doesn't work, so the game will still induce headaches on Linux, but they did note it's a known issue that's being worked on.

The game is sadly still unplayable, as the blur effect on motion is horrific, and the performance without our previous tweaks is still below 30FPS on my Nvidia 970. If they could fix the Motion Blur to be turned off instead of always on, with our performance fix it would at least be playable until their official OpenGL performance issues are sorted.

It's really great to see them fix a good few Linux issues though like the big yellow pointers when using survivor sense, and input freezing. I can confirm now holding tab to change weapon does actually work, and the mouse wheel works now too, so that's really nice to see. The mousewheel scrolling on the map is incredibly slow though, so that needs adjusting and I've reported it.

You still cannot secure a safe-zone on Linux, so I have reminded them of this, again.

Full patch notes copied below for referencing:
Quote•numerous performance optimizations, both general and configuration-specific, that resolve many performance problems
•compatibility fixes – related to language and regional system settings
•fixes a number of crashes in various situations
•blocked cheating by changing game’s data files
•new issue tracking mechanisms (-safemode switch, additional logs, minidumps always, full dumps on request)
•numerous audio compatibility fixes

•Bug fixing:
oresolved disappearing inventory in a save game in specific circumstances
oresolved blocked using of items after breaking reloading of shooting weapon
oremoved weapon duplication glitch of throwable weapons
olimited camera field of view on cutscenes when in-game FOV set to other than default
olowered frequency of docket availability information

KNOWN ISSUES WE ARE WORKING ON:
•performance issues of systems based on the AMD processor
•freezes when using Nvidia DoF
•unsatisfactory performance on multi-GPU systems

1.2.1 Linux specific patch notes:
•added keyboard support for unicode characters
•fixed crashes (when unplugging game PAD controller, on landing movie)
•fixed primary weapon HUD selection via mouse controller
•fixed input system performance (along with mouse wheel)
•fixed v-sync in windowed mode
•fixed fullscreen support
•fixed game process priority
•fixed water reflection
•fixed in-game menu map background
•fixed characters faces morphing (chatters)
•fixed missing (yellow) materials, i.e. sense mode, bushes, rocks

KNOWN LINUX ISSUES WE ARE WORKING ON:
•the game does not launch on some systems (i.e. Linux Mint)
•the game does not work with Radeon cards
•some rendering/OpenGL performance issues
•too intense blur effect

Bring on the next patch, Techland. We will continue to barrage them with our issues until they fix them. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: GuestI’m not on Ubuntu but still, the game shouldn’t do that.
ofc it shouldnt..what distro are you on..maybe we can iron out whats the cause then?
we were thinking if upstart based distros maybe have this issue? or apparmor?`or something whats common for those who have the issues with that

Quoting: SamsaiAs far as I'm concerned, the worst thing is the blur. That chromatic whateveritis doesn't cause nausea or headaches. Normally I'm fine with motion blur and low FOV but this game causes problems even for me.

Does the Linux version not have the FOV slider? That would also suck.

Quoting: OrkultusThey say that they are fixing issues on distros like Linux Mint?? my laptop with the intel chip runs the game in Linux Mint... Although after this patch, my AMD Phenom 2 x6 1100T still wont load this game.

From what I've heard, this game is compiled with SSE3 on Linux. AMD CPUs older than Bulldozer don't have SSE3.

Yes, we have that too, but the option doesn't work. As noted.

Are you sure that it is motion blur bothering you and not the horrible chromactic *blahblahblah* they have added that can't be turned off? It certainly bothers me.

Motion blur has never given me any physical issues, I simply don't like it because it doesn't feel natural and it usually eats up some FPS for no good reason.. I've been playing it in windows (*ducks*) and can turn off the MB but I still perceive the chromatic whatever as blur when running around and it bothers me. That's why I was asking.

EDIT* ok, wow, I just fired it up in Linux again to see if there were any noticeable performance improvements for me. There wasn't, although the addition of vsync is nice. I now see how bad the motion blur is. It is REAL bad. When you run forward everything goes blurry and then even when you stop running it stays that way for about a second making it even that much more jarring

Great to see stuff getting fixed!

Anyone else had this bug were zombie heads disappear when you get close to them (without you know… chopping them off :)).

Restarting the game sorted it. I've only had it once so far.

My personal Experiences:

SteamOS Update 153
Latest Nvidia Drivers as of 02/01/2015
i5 4670K @ 4.0Ghz
16GB 1866Mhz DDR3 Ram
250GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD
GTX 980

Initally there was an issue with the characters all having silver/grey clothing. I did some digging and found that this perticular issue could be solved by updating the nvidia drivers, and so I did. The game does have some random OpenGL Rendering issues (Known Problem), and I do have to agree that the blur effect used is TOO DAMN MUCH, especially without the ability to turn it off. Other than that my game ran 60+ fps on Ultra without a problem, until slightly before/ after I went outside the tower. There I found the framrate to completly tank. Not quite slideshow slow, but deffiantly very sluggish. Rather than trying the tweaks posted on here, I decided to see what I could do to increase performance from within the game. The first thing I did was bring view distance all the way down to the minimum, and you know what? My framerate soared. It's now very fluid in all of my initial tests from just right outside of the tower. I'm going to do some more testing after I get some sleep.
