Fallen: A2P Protocol is a pretty good looking turn based strategy currently in Early Access, and I have been graced with a key to take a look at it.

Some thoughts
As a massive fan of XCOM, Fallen: A2P Protocol was very enticing offering a similar experience with the combat, and the developers have been kind enough to give us a testing key.

Keep in mind that this is Early Access, so it won’t be too polished just yet, and doesn’t have all the content in.

Graphics wise, it’s actually somewhat comparable to XCOM, and that’s quite impressive. Indie developers who manage to crank out graphics like this always impress me, as it can’t be an easy thing to do for a small team with smaller resources.

Performance
For a game so early in development, performance is reasonably good. On the highest possible graphics settings I get between 40-60FPS. Considering this is a turn based strategy that’s great. I am sure they will be able to tune that some more though as time goes on.

Gameplay
It really does play very much like XCOM, only not as polished (obviously). The cover system is the same although units don’t act like they are in cover (no in-cover animation), you get a warning when you spot a new enemy and they scamper about, and each character has a certain amount of AP (Action Points) to use each turn. It even has an action camera sometimes when you kill an enemy. While it's clearly emulating XCOM, it's not a bad thing, and it's looking like they are onto the start of something very interesting.

There are some differences to it though. You loot enemies you kill during the battle, instead of collecting everything at the end. You can also end the turn for each person, instead of ending your overall turn. Eventually I figured out that hitting the tick icon will end the entire turn, so each character having an end turn option seems totally redundant.

The combat does need a lot of polishing, as enemies directly in your line of fire often can’t be fired upon, even though there’s a clear line. The combat right now does feel a little bit stale, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just didn't find the combat exciting enough at the current state of the game.

Between missions you get some sort of world map that resembles the USA, where you simply click and your little car moves towards it. It’s very basic, but I’m not sure what else a worldmap really needs. This allows you to pick your next mission, and it seems that’s currently all. It looks like you can run out of fuel too, so you need to be somewhat careful (you start with a lot).

Story wise, it could use a lot of work. I'm not just talking about the story itself feeling a bit flat, but the English text needs a look over too, as some of it just doesn't quite make sense.

Final Verdict: It’s very much like an unpolished version of XCOM, with some slight gameplay differences during battles, and a different storyline. We will likely do another look at it when it has come along somewhat, and once it’s had a big polishing pass. It’s one to keep an eye on that’s for sure, as I can see some real promise here.

Seems pretty interesting.

However, I'm starting to feel a bit swamped with "turn-based strategy titles". Pillars of Eternity, with it's RTwP (Real-Time with Pause) combat felt like a most welcome relief from everything turn-based.

Ironic, since i feel that it was not long ago at all, that I was desperate for a glorious return of games like "X-COM" or "Wasteland 2" and would have happily purchased anything along those lines.

Anyway, this looks polished enough to add to my "wishlist".
