GOL Cast: Revisiting the ghost hunters of GhostControl Inc.

By - | Views: 5,215
What is this? Didn't you already play this game on a GOL Cast episode? Yes I did and back then GhostControl Inc. was pretty much broken and now the developers asked us to check out their updated game. So, let's see how it fares!

GhostControl Inc. is a mix of ghost busting and company management, where you must complete missions to get money, which you will then spend on new equipment, headquarters, employee wages, hospital bills and gasoline. However, you are not the one and only ghost busting company around, you have plenty of rivals. This means that you will have to compete with them in order to gain access to those all so important missions and the rewards they bring.

If you wish to check out my initial thoughts about the game, you can check my previous article here.

Like I said, last time I played this game I had quite a lot of problems. I had game-breaking bugs before the video was possible and, while we had worked out those issues with the developers, it was impossible to save your progress, which meant that I was barely able to scratch the surface of GhostControl and thus my first impressions were pretty bad.

This time however, the game works and I have yet to find a single bug in the game, apart from one of my traps ”disappearing”, though it actually turned out that one of my ghost hunters had taken it and hidden it away in his inventory. The major problems I had with it have been fixed, including saving and loading the game, though saving takes a bit. It's just a minor thing, but sometimes it feels like the game has crashed. If the developers are listening, I'd suggest adding a small animation or an icon that shows that the game is being saved.

Because I was able to load and save my progress, I had the chance to do more “research” (playing the game) and I was able to experience more of the game. And I have to say that I missed out on a lot of stuff. The difficulty of the game rose significantly after acquiring the bigger HQ, so the missions aren't so quick and easy anymore. While previously I was fighting against one or two poltergeists with one ghost hunter, now I'm struggling with a whole band of ghouls and Halloween spirits. It's also a lot more tactical now, because of the increased difficulty, so I'm spending more time thinking about my trap placement, choke-points and possible ambushes. Throw in the estimations of collateral damage and you have a pretty tricky situation to figure out.

Overall the game is really good. The graphics look good and the combination of company management and turn-based tactical combat just works. There is plenty of stuff to do and the “quest line” you are given gives you a clear set of objectives to complete. It's quite similar to XCOM games, so if you like those then you might want to check out this game.

Being an XCOM fan I can't miss it. I also look forward to Chroma Squad.
