Interstellar Marines FPS Big Update Due This Month, New Online Modes

It’s no secret that we really like Interstellar Marines, but it could do with more content and online modes to keep people interested in it. It may even be updated next week.

The developers confirmed to me on twitter that the big update should come next week:

@gamingonlinux We are hoping to have it out next week. For the love of the game!

This update should include a Unity 5 build, new online modes like Multiplayer Deathmath, Team Deathmatch and Team Domination as well as fixing the long standing and annoying bug where a key card doesn't spawn in a co-op mission.

We suspect it may get pushed another week based on their other tweets, as it seems the conversion to Unity 5 hasn't been as smooth as they hoped. They may even drop the conversion to Unity 5 for now, and carry on with features due to it taking so long (6 weeks and counting). It’s a shame if they do drop conversion to Unity 5, but the game needs to draw players back in quite badly.

Personally, I would love to see more graphical options be included, so people with weaker PC’s can tweak it a little bit. And for people like me to up it some more!

Interstellar Marines resurrects the old school tactical FPS, offering a unique blend of co-op, role-playing and non-linear gameplay. Set in a believable future, you take on the role of an elite soldier hand picked to join Project IM, a top secret military program being assembled to protect mankind from all dangers outside our solar system.

Interstellar Marines is inspired by Half-Life, System Shock 2 and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Our game is all about evolving the FPS recipe with all the inspirations we've assimilated since the birth of the genre. I'm not saying it has to have in depth lore and story, but they could at least add a bit more personality. Look at TF2, Fistful of Frags, or Chivalry. Admittedly, TF2 has some story going on in the background, but in the game there's no story in any of these, but they each have there own look and feel. This game in comparison looks like they were trying to emulate Halo's ODST marines and ran out of ideas after that :/ But hopefully they'll surprise me before the full release!

They're going for Hard Sci-Fi. The game is beautiful, the immersion is really great (esp. the helmet), the robots are creepy and quite fun in the Co-Op mode and the plans for hell week and the whole back story that you are training to be an interstellar marine. Seriously, I see more story and imagination in this game than all of the games you listed combined.

Also, this game has been in development for years and back in the day they had some really sweet mutant shark renders so hopefully they get those in the game soon too!

Or has the situation changed since the last time I tried to get a feel for this game?

You might be able to say that's the case right now. But I thought their goal actually the opposite, that they wanted it to be primarily a single player game with multiplayer on the side.

I might be mixing this game up with another one, but I could have sworn a developer of this game commented that they only have a larger multiplayer component right now because it's just easier to do once you have all the game mechanics working. But creating a single player campaign still requires a lot of work beyond that

Yeah, that was my understanding, as well. Just to be safe, I did some quick searching - seems like they have a pretty clear plan laid out here. The devs posted a bit later, stating that they're releasing story stuff in chunks, and that the story will probably be "finished" (i.e. all story chunks released) in 2016-17.

Great! I really don't have any interest in any variant of multiplayer, but a singleplayer game where you play as a part of a spec-ops task force in a space/sci-fi setting and get to battle various threats in different missions, that would be great.

Sort of like MassEffect, only with FPS instead of TPS and probably less movie-like gameplay. (and hopefully no standard skynet/replicant/cylons/shodan/borg or other synthetic a.i.-menace)

Yeah, I'm also missing some good FPS for Linux. Maybe Insurgency is a game worth looking forward to. I'd really love to dive into some fun multiplayer game after a hard day's work from time to time again.

I would love to take another fresh look at this game after this big update and maybe debunk some of the bugs I found.
