Introducing: The Cheapskate's Corner
Posted , 15 May 2013 at 11:34 pm UTC / 10019 views
If last week we witnessed the birth of The Funding Crowd, a weekly column devoted to the crowdfunding of Linux games, today it's the turn of The Cheapskate's Corner, another weekly column where we'll round up the current bundles and sales of Linux games. Fans of The Funding Crowd don't despair, we decided to move it to the weekends and do this other column on Wednesdays instead.

Disclaimer: If you're a regular of this webpage's Sales List (and needless to say, you should be ) you probably already know everything I'm going to talk about, but keep reading just in case.

First of all, if anybody has been living under a rock for the past week, know that there's a brand new Humble Bundle going on. This time featuring most of Double Fine Productions latest games.

Pay what you want and get Psychonauts (with a new Linux build), Costume Quest and Stacking:

Beat the average (currently at $8.26) and also get Double Fine's hit Brütal Legend:

image

Pay $35 or more and become a backer of Broken Age (a.k.a. Double Fine Adventure):

image

Finally, pay $70 or more and also get a T-shirt (shipping worldwide included).

The usual rules apply: $0.01 minimum, $1 if you want Steam keys. Get it at the usual place.

Secondly there's indiebundle.org's The Alpha Funding Bundle, which's been around for quite some time now, so don't wait too much if you want it in case it ends soon.

For $5 you get Gravi and Monsters! (which are no longer on alpha):

The bundle also includes Super Tower Rush, which is only available for Windows, but the developers have showed some interest in porting it to Linux, so you never know.

You can get this bundle for $5 here.

This one is still warm as it started yesterday! The latest Groupees games bundles used to feature at least 2 or 3 Linux games, however the current Be Mine 8 has only one: Paranautical Activity, which can be yours for as little as $1:

image

At the $5 level there's Constant C, an interesting 2D puzzle platformer. At the moment there's no Linux version, but the developers are porting it to Unity so it will be available for Linux soon.

Plus, there's still 2 mistery games and at least 2 bonus to be revealed, so the Linux games count could increase in the next days. Keep tuned!

Whenever you decide to purchase this bundle, get it here.

Finally, we have a Show Me The Games initiative called Show Me The Sales. A bunch of indie games on sale, most of them 50% off, directly from the developers.

The Linux titles available on this sale are: And Yet It Moves, Beat Hazard Ultra, Darwinia, Defcon, Defender's Quest, Long Live The Queen, Loren The Amazon Princess, Lux Delux, Magical Diary: Horse Hall, Offspring Fling!, Planet Stronghold, Scoregasm and Voxatron.

You can get any of these games here, but be quick, as this promotion ends in 2 days!

Also beware: sometimes the Buy Now button leads you to the purchase of the Windows version. It's better to go the developer's site and purchase the game there.

And yet another bundle came out without warning! The never seen before The Bitcoin Bundle, created to promote the Bitcoin currency itself, as this is the only payment method available. Pay what you want (0.01 Bitcoin minimum for Steam keys, that's about $1.18) and get Eufloria HD, And Yet It Moves, World of Goo and Spirits:

The games may not be all that attractive since they all have been bundled more than once in Humble Indie Bundles, but it's a good opportunity to complete your game library if you lack any of them and to try this form of online currency. Plus, 10% of the proceedings go to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

And that's it. There are other individual sales, but you'd better check them on the Sales page. See you next Wednesday with more bundles and sales!

A Linux user for more than 10 years, I've just recently rediscovered the passion for gaming. Couldn't have chosen a better time than now: the second Golden Age of Linux gaming.

Now we're talking! The cheapskate's corner, just my kind of corner
Just purchased the Be Mine 8 bundle, Groupees have been making some really cheap bundles recently. Even though they're all practically Windows-only, I can still play most of them in Wine.

I had no idea about the Show Me The Sales site, checking it out now. I've also been eyeing bundlestars.com. Cheap prices, but again Windows-only (I did read somewhere that Nuclear dawn might have a Linux release though).

I also monitor game prices and sales at www.cheapshark.com to get the best bang per buck hehe
P.S: Paranautical Activity still doesn't work in Ubuntu for me. It hangs after clicking Play.

Nice Shame I've already got everything listed

By the way, if you are into romance focused story driven games (with a bit of tactical RPG) you should definitely check out Planet Stronghold and Loren -- they are easily the two best Winter Wolves games (though Heileen is also very good, but doesn't have the RPG element).

Looks like someone did a reading fail: https://twitter.com/S1968G/status/335044448369143808 since this article is nothing to do with crowdfunding...

SabunP.S: Paranautical Activity still doesn't work in Ubuntu for me. It hangs after clicking Play.

Same problem here... The download links have disappeared from the game page in Desura, so maybe they're about to release a fix or something.

LOL, he must've only read the tagline and got it wrong. Maybe I wrote it wrong and ended up saying another thing than I intended? I'm editing it to avoid any future confusion.

The funny thing is that, when I was thinking up a name for this column, I pondered whether the term cheapskate could be offensive to anyone.

PS: Thanks for editing the article, liamdawe!

No problem, I added shinyloot and fixed some spelling errors a minute ago in the top of it.

I think in regards to the name I liked it but sadly some people have no sense of humour/need a thicker skin/need to read things properly.

I think the problem is they saw the word "crowdfunding" in the same sentence, but they didn't check the structure of the sentence.
