Looks like Mojang will be supporting the new Minecraft launcher on Linux

By - | Views: 15,546
Good news Minecraft [Official Site] fans! Mojang seem to have changed their minds on Linux support for the new Minecraft launcher they are working on.

Originally, I spoke to one of the Minecraft developers in July where they said they had no official plans for it.

The new launcher will not use Java, but Minecraft itself still will.

Now in a reddit post the same developer has said this:
QuoteWe currently have a build for Windows and OSX, but we'll try to have a Linux one ready for testing shortly.

And then the FAQ about platforms says:
QuoteLinux: None as of yet, but we're having our top man look into it.
The top man's name is Shoghi.

They also shared a shot of the new launcher:

This is good, as Minecraft is massively popular and it would be a shame to see us sidelined after supporting us for so long. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: edogreat news for the 17 linux users

It might not be a great new for you or me, but it is a huge deal for the community. Minecraft is incredibly popular on Windows and if people can play it on Linix it's a huge Win and they have 1 less concern about switching to Linux...

Those who dig Minecraft really should check out 7 Ways To Die - they got much in common. A group of buddies and I have set up a server and are so totally living the life of post apocalyptic survivors.

Heck, this game even scratch my Fallout itch.

I've never played it, but my 16 year old son has played it for several years on my Linux PC, including doing a bunch of mod'ing and other stuff, without much help from me. I'm sure he's learned a lot about computers from this experience, and I'd hate to see him lose the ability to play Minecraft on Linux (although I think he's mostly finally moved on now, but still).

I will still use MultiMC for this.
Still, good on them

I think you'll find there's a lot more than just 17 Linux Minecraft games. My youngest Son has been playing it since it first appeared.

Our kids have two copies so they can play together.

You had me hyped up for a C++ version of the game using their work on the win10 edition, but no, it's just the launcher

it's cool I guess

Good news, but I'm gonna keep playing and enjoying Minetest. I do agree though, this is one less barrier to someone switching from Windows to Linux, they can keep playing the thing they like.
