Many Linux Games To Look Forward To In 2014

By - | Views: 63,991
Non-Stable Version Released

Starbound - An awesome "universe sandbox" that I have already fallen in love with for it's awesome sprite work and sandbox fun, fans of Minecraft and Terraria will easily like this one. Sadly it has had a few character wipes due to it still being in beta, with another final wipe still due soon, making it a good time to get it ready now!
Full of crafting, lots of different monsters to fight and capture with unique abilities, millions of planets to explore with different biomes and weather, and a whole lot more.

Planetary Annihilation - What could easily become the go-to RTS game for Linux gamers, this game offers plenty of destruction on a truly massive scale. Like the sound of smashing an asteroid into someone else's planet? Go for it as that's actually possible, see the trailer below to see it in action:

Infection: Last Rites - DNA - A first person zombie shooter that has promising visuals and gameplay set after everything has been wiped out by the infection, see my video of it below:

Wings of Saint Nazaire - A seriously awesome looking retro space-shooter built with inspiration from Wing Commander and X-Wing, another game I did a video of below, you can also download the alpha I played on the official site!

Project Zomboid - One of the projects I have followed the longest, this isometric zombie survival game has been through hell, but the progress is excellent and it's very playable already! Looks like they might be porting the game away from Java as well thanks to a new team-member.

Drifter - Another game that was crowdfunded on Kickstarter, this one is a 2D space sandbox game about trading and exploration in a procedurally-generated galaxy, so no game will be the same!

Fancy Skulls - A fun if a little odd Unity3D FPS that is randomly generated on each play, with quirky graphics and solid game-play making it a must try. You collect coins from chests and complete rooms to upgrade your weapons and health, so it does work to keep things fresh as you progress.

Maia - A colony building simulator game based in space on an alien world, taking inspiration from both Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress, there seems to be a lot of chickens around too.

Mutant Gangland - Mutant Gangland is a fast, neat and simple turn-based-strategy game where mutants fight robots, the premise sounds like a blast and it has cute graphics; an included level editor should extend the life of this strategy game too.

Portal 2 - Another Valve title, the sequel to the frustratingly cool Portal where you control a gun that creates a portal between two places to help you solve puzzles. This one includes some fun co-op play.
Currently in beta for Linux on Steam.

Most of these look really good!

One thing to note is that Defender's Quest 2 will look quite a lot different (better!!) from the original (see the sole screenshot on the linked page). DQ1 is really worth the money, but you can get it free if you pre-order DQ2. I normally don't much care for tower-defense type games and the art style looked really, um, MS Paint-y, but they did something really right with the gameplay because trying the demo turned into an insta-buy, and just thinking about it makes me glad the weekend is about to start. Personally, I'm looking forward to the sequel more than most of the other games in the list.

(No, they didn't pay me to praise it, and I'm not affiliated with them at all.)

Yo're forgetting tropico 5! It should be available in a 2-3 months.

Apparently not the best known series, but imo a great one. I've spent countless hours on tropico 4, which runs really well through wine.

*sigh*, do I really need a disclaimer on every post that covers a few things...:P

I didn't forget, there are 100s of games I have missed out to keep the post from being 100 pages long.

I hope to see more than that this year, Linux needs a big push in 2014 while it's still relevant in people's mind for gaming, otherwise it will slip into neckbeard oblivion once again sadly. :*(

Tesla Effect, the kickstarted new Tex Murphy adventure, will also be out soon – judging by the newest update video in April:

I don't know if the Linux version will be out simultaneously with the Windows and Mac version but I think it won't be too long afterwards.

A bit OT! But I'm so upset about Humble Bundle right now.

This IDIOTS have removed Amazon Payment & Google for European Users with introducing that **** of regional pricing **** in the humble store.

SOMA is high on my "Looking forward" list as well, but the little life-action teaser clips actually made me wish it was an FMV game. :/

Luckily, it looks like the new Tex Murphy game will fill all my need for cheesy FMV ham. :D

And then's the RPG trifecta of Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity announced for this year (altough I'd bet that the latter will be pushed to 2015). And in 2015, Torment: Tides of Numenera. :)

Also (apart from the onces you already named): Unrest, Harvest, The Maker's Eden, Gods Will Be Watching, Tangiers, Among the Sleep, Dreamfall Chapters, Lords of Xulima, The Diviner, ...

Damn, that's really quite a lot...

Limit Theory (http://ltheory.com/) looks very interesting and already has high graphical fidelity, procedurally generated spaceships, planets, universe, etc.

Ooooh! I bought X:COM Enemy Unknown for Windows last year and it only a matter of time before it shows up in my Steam queue! Besides that, there's War For The Underworld (still in bedrock beta), Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Torment coming(all Kickstarted games)this year.

2013 was The Year Of Linux Gaming. 2014 is when the floodgates open.
