Open Source Morrowind Engine OpenMW 0.31.0 Released

The latest and greatest OpenMW has been released which pushed the engine even further to allow us Linux gamers to play the excellent Morrowind natively. You can check out the source code on github to see how it's put together.

I love it when people come together to create a project as awesome as this. Much like OpenXcom for the original X-COM game, OpenMW requires the Morrowind data files.

There is no video for the new release yet, but to give you an idea check out the video from the 0.3 release:

The changelog is massive as usual, so I want include the full log of fixes just the new features:

How many releases do you think will be until this project will be fully playable (could finish the standard game campaign)?

I think it's somewhat close to being fully playable. I've wasted a couple of hours into it and I didn't have too many problems, apart from occasional bugs, crashes and generally bad performance. I've also heard that you can complete the main quest with some glitches. Some of the side quests might not work though.

It also needs a pretty beefy machine for now, because the engine is not that optimized. My main rig (GTX 760, Intel i5 2500k @ 3.3 GHz, 8 GB of RAM) usually maintains a 30+ FPS framerate, but some of the outdoor areas are really taxing and the framerate can drop to around 10 FPS.

You can already have fun with OpenMW, but it's not exactly like Morrowind yet.

Not really, I'm still using this crappy old socket 939 Athlon64 3500+ w/ 2Gb of ran and an 8800GTS 320Mb, OpenMW plays pretty good at 1920x1200 so long as I don't turn up the graphics settings.

Running an AMD FX-6300 (3.5Ghz running at 3.8), Radeon HD 6670. 1920x1080, tending to get anywhere from 10 to 30fps (proprietary drivers). Same GPU but with an ancient Athlon X2 CPU, I was lucky to get 7fps maximum. Considering AMD's notoriously bad Linux drivers, for an unoptimised engine that isn't bad at all. This is using an install that had had MOSG 3.0 installed on it, too.

How can it be close to the release if performance outside is still very poor even on high end hardware? For a game that old, the engine is nowhere near the optimized condition.

Of course it's not close to "release" (aka version 1.0) and we were not talking about being 100% complete with performance parity with Morrowind. We were just discussing when the game is fully playable, as in all the features have been implemented. For a 100% playable experience only thing you need is hardware that is powerful enough and all the game features. Naturally before OpenMW 1.0 is released they will have to do a lot of optimization to make the game run reasonably.
