This one is quite vague, but a new job posting may suggest that a Linux port of Elite: Dangerous isn't out of the question.

The job posting listed here states this:
QuoteAbility to write platform-independent code for deployment on Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and current generation consoles.

Usually, I would put this down to servers and not give it another thought. My interest here is specifically about deployment and mentioning Linux along with existing versions. They also have a totally seperate job listing related to Servers, so that has also boosted my interest in this.

Of course, I am speculating here, but it's fun to do now and then about bigger titles. It seems like a rather sought-after title too, with a single SteamOS/Linux post on the Steam forum having 29 pages of people talking about it.

About the game (Official)
Elite: Dangerous is the definitive massively multiplayer space epic, bringing gaming’s original open world adventure to the modern generation with a connected galaxy, evolving narrative and the entirety of the Milky Way re-created at its full galactic proportions.

Starting with only a small starship and a few credits, players do whatever it takes to earn the skill, knowledge, wealth and power to survive in a futuristic cutthroat galaxy and to stand among the ranks of the iconic Elite. In an age of galactic superpowers and interstellar war, every player’s story influences the unique connected gaming experience and handcrafted evolving narrative. Governments fall, battles are lost and won, and humanity’s frontier is reshaped, all by players’ actions.

I wouldn't get too excited about this, I think it's just server related, not game client related unfortunately...

I'd just like to interject for a moment...
QuoteAbility to write platform-independent code for deployment on Windows, Mac OSX, GNU/Linux, and current generation consoles.
:D

More seriously, Linux is not the important word in this quote, so I don't think that it means anything. Maybe they consider it, but I won't get my hopes up from that.

Elite Dangerous on Linux? That would be too good to be true.

Meh, I doubt it will happen. I'd rather have Rebel Galaxy or Starpoint Gemini 2 anyway.

David Braben's position on gaming on Linux http://www.tuxradar.com/content/interview-david-braben-0
In short, technically possible, two issues, sales numbers and fragmentation (which could be solved with steam os).

Nice link jgacas, that's actually giving me a little more hope now.

Now begin the age where SteamOS (with Linux piggybacked) is now the sensible choice to develop for.

Many thanks to Valve, may their Income be High and their Sales Low.

It certainly seems like more than servers, especially because of the mention of consoles. But I wouldn't get too hot and bothered about this - it's still just a job posting right now, and will be a long time before we see a result from this - if we even do.

Not holding my breath.

I would love a port of this, I miss playing it was great fun. I know they have a Mac Client already so some of the effort of porting the Cobra engine to opengl must already have been done. Surely it couldn't be too much of a stretch to extend to Linux.

I reckon the stumbling block I reckon is the fact they have to keep all x86 platforms in sync, what with Mac and windows players being in the same universe, any Linux users would also need to be in the same in order to give the place any life.
