Starbound is a fantastic game, and the stable update has been long overdue, but that wait ends right now. The stable update is absolutely massive, and it's really worth trying out.

The game is in early access, but it has drawn a lot of criticism for keeping the majority of the updates to the game in their nightly and unstable branches for a long, long time. You were able to opt-in at any point to try them out, but breakage was frequent and expected. The massive stable update was needed to allow people like me who feared character wipes and game-breaking bugs.

We tried the unstable branch a few times along the way to keep track of progress, and checking it yesterday before it was pushed to stable we could see the performance was fantastic.

The fresh stable release has launching problems on Linux from Steam, but if you find the "launcher" file in the games directory in either linux64 or linux32 the game should run fine, as it did for me. I have notified the developers of the issues, and I noticed others have too, so it shouldn't take long to fix as it's a fix lib errors.
Since it now has a launcher, it may not be long before the DRM free release to pops up, and more of you can join us then who dislike using Steam.

One notable improvement is that quests now carry over from the single player to the multiplayer games, as before you ended up doing the tutorials again on each server from what I remember of the original stable build. This is much nicer, and bringing single player characters with your inventory, and ship, to the multiplayer was always a high point of Starbound for me.

Changelog
- New biomes
- New surface and underground mini-biomes
- Improved terrain generation
- Star and planet types correspond to difficulty levels, giving players access to progressively more extreme environments as they advance through the game
- Player ships have an AI to interact with for quests and stuff
- Ship upgrades
- Outpost - A big area with NPC's, shops, quests and more
- Novakid playable race
- Techs are now split into head, body, legs and suit slots, so you can equip up to four at once!
- And a billion other things (see more here)

About the game (From Steam)
In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You'll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

Starbound lets you live out your own story of space exploration, discovery and adventure. Settle down and farm the land, hop from planet to planet claiming resources, or make regular visits to populated settlements, taking on jobs and earning a living. NPCs are scattered about the worlds, offering quests and challenges for those looking for a little extra excitement in their lives.

GOL Server
Thanks to our amazing server admin Levi, we have a server! Simply pop "sb.gamingonlinux.com" into your server address and you can join in on the fun with other Linux gamers, but we allow anyone to join.
We are still new to game servers, so it may be a little funny at times, so please let us know of server issues.

I will personally be on around 8PM GMT for a Starbound meet-up.

You can grab it right now on Steam, and it's on sale with 25% off too, what a day! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

those damned early access devs who keep updating their game, I wish they'd just abandon it already :-p

It's up to date again now.

I have updated the server again today, it would be ideal if we could come up with some sort of auto-updater for it, so we will look into it.

Thanks to our server guru Levi the server now shutsdown and auto updates at 04:00am and 14:00 every day GMT time.

Thanks to Cheeseness as well for the gift copy for our new official GOL Steam account that we use for the Starbound server download.
