Super Dungeon Run recently released on Steam for Linux in Early Access, and the gameplay sounded interesting so I gave it a run or two.

About the game (Official)
Super Dungeon Run is a fast paced, addictive action game in which you guide a party of hapless heroes on a quest for loot in the depths of a dark and dangerous dungeon!

You’ll always start off with a small group of peasants. The peasants aren’t… how shall I put this… the smartest of individuals, but they’re a merry bunch and are always eager to please! They like nothing better than a good dungeon run, but sadly, they’re not very good at it.

That’s where you come in! Try and get them to the exit stairs safely. Everything else is a bonus as far as I’m concerned!

Initial Thoughts
I’m going to be fair to it, as it’s a brand new and fresh-faced Early Access title!

It feels rather a lot like Okhlos that I tried recently, with you waving your little army around smashing everything up, only you’re in a well-lit dungeon.

The basic gameplay is actually surprisingly good, don’t be fooled by how easy the start is. At first I thought there was no strategy to it, but I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Everything feels very floaty, as your characters slip and slide all over the screen, and they often get stuck on something as basic as the corner of a corridor—annoying. The ice skating (they aren't really, but it’s a perfect explanation) characters are where the strategy comes, as you could move them too fast and they may slide into an exploding barrel which may propel them into a fire pit, for just one example. That actually happened to me, and my little friends didn't last very long after.

It gets much more difficulty too, which is great. I actually came across some bigger monsters, and they beat they crap out of my little peasants, to the point of using up all my potions.

You get different rewards based on your time too, so you can try to speed run it, or you can take your time collecting all the gold, levelling up your people and opening all the chests.

My first proper run ended on floor six, as only three of my crew made it out of floor five alive, and by then they were a bit worn down. Luckily, my run ended with my reaching level two, which unlocked archers.

That’s something I really like about the game as there is a bit of depth to it, as you unlock more characters, do quests, and you can craft items from junk collected during your run too.

Issues
The thing that’s slightly bugging me, is that the characters graphics really don’t match the dungeon style, and it’s distracting me quite a bit. To be honest though, they are starting to grow on me the more I play.

The characters can be a bit too floaty, and need too much micromanagement to actually get them to stand near an enemy and fight them, but I am sure that will be worked on as it’s early days.

Final thoughts: It’s a really great start, and I can’t wait to see what the game will look like when they add their planned dynamic lighting and shadows.
