Those following Dying Light would have probably seen Techland's recent posts about disabling mod support, and the reaction to it. Well, you will probably be interested in the fact that Techland are now working on some official mod tools. It also looks like another patch is due soon!

Their original announcement about it is as follows:
QuoteWith the recent patch (1.2.1) on Steam we blocked cheating to make sure the game’s PvP system (Be The Zombie) would not be abused. This, however, had the side-effect of hindering mod-makers from making changes to the game.

Creating obstacles for modders has never been our intention, and we are sorry for the inconvenience. We are now working on a quick patch that will re-enable common tweaks while stopping cheating in the game’s multiplayer mode.

Irrespective if this is a PR reaction from disgruntled customers or simply their inevitable goal, it's exciting for Techland to show their interest in modding as this will definitely help boost their reputation and continuity of the game.

QuoteAt Techland, we have always supported the mod community, and loved seeing how our own game can be changed by the players. A big part of the original Dead Island’s success was the passion and creativity of mod-makers from our community. We want the same for Dying Light. For quite some time, we have been working, and still are, on giving modders all the power we can. We will keep you updated!

Techland have now opened a modding forum for all to express and share ideas, which can be accessed here: http://forum.techland.pl/forum/106-modding-tools/

The important post is this one:
QuoteHi guys,

Today we want to announce something really special - we are creating our own set of Modding Tools.

We're all in awe of some of the modds we've seen so far - the drop kick that send the zombies into the sky is nuts. It's amazing to see what you guys are able to come up with.

Soon, you'll be able to create your own version of a zombie outbreak. We've been working on a set of Modding Tools for some time, but we would also love to hear your thoughts on the issue.

So, tell us what would you like to see in our modding tools. What would you like to create with it? What would you like to do with them?
Give us your thoughts right here below in the comments section.

We're hoping to support the creations you make, so please, let us know what you would like in there, and let's create something special together.

Be sure to reply with your requests to have it Linux compatible, as it would be awesome to officially mod it on Linux directly.

Also, it looks like they are hard at work on another patch, and it will include Linux. Checking up on their SteamDB history, it seems a lot of activity on new patches is going in.

If they can get performance on DL to match DI with the most recent patch, then I'm exited. I'm 20 hours in on DL though, so I'm probably close to finishing it.

I have a feeling that Dying Light may be a little more demanding even if they optimize it :P Crossing my fingers regardless though!

The game is currently unplayable for me with an i7-2600 + 16GB + gtx970 + SSD ... ~20fps in outside areas. Fortunately the game has been gifted to me, otherwise I would be very pissed off.
We need a fix. Soon.

Just turn down the view distance to minimum. It's fully playable for me on my 980.

Have you also tried disabling the sun shadows? You can put the 'varlist_performance.scr' file this folder:

~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Dying Light/DW/out/Settings

Here is what mine looks like:

+++

// PERFORMANCE

VarFloat("f_lighting_range", 50.0)
VarInt("i_shadows_sun_on", 0)
VarInt("i_indoor_on", 0)
VarFloat("f_alpha_test_value", 0.0)
VarInt("i_clouds_shadows_on", 0)
VarInt("i_lighting_sun_on", 1)
VarInt("i_render_reflection_on", 0)
VarInt("i_out_buffer_on", 1)
VarInt("i_simple_shadows_on", 1)
VarInt("i_shadows_sun_hq_on", 0)

+++

If I don't have the 'i_shadows_sun_on' set to 0, I get the same type of performance with the ~20fps when running around outside. I also manually set my view distance in the 'Video.scr' file to '1.00' from 1.4 (which is the default if you turn it all the way down).

I'm running this on Linux Mint 17.1, GTX 760Ti, 16G, i7-4770, 346.35 driver from xedgers ppa. I get avergae 50 FPS when playing.

Hope that helps!!

Well the good news is now us AMD GPU guys can play! (Patch 1.4 released today.)

Down side is even on a 290x + 4790k the performance is erm, whats the word... Crap!

Thing is. I not convinced its the GPU/Driver that's at fault.

Edit, They have disabled the steam overlay it seems. No idea what fps is

You sure? It was working for me. But yeah, performance is still pretty bad. I had the sun-shadows off and all setting low/off and mainly hung around 40-50, sometimes it'd reach 70 in small spaces, and a lot of action and it dips below 30 (I have a GTX 760 331 drivers). I'll try it with sun shadows on later (and maybe reducing my FOV from 90, come to think of it), but I don't expect to be dazzled :P
