The Skullgirls Promised Linux Port Seems Iffy Again (UPDATED)

By - | Views: 9,196

UPDATE - They confirmed to us they are looking for someone else.

@gamingonlinux That's right. We are currently looking for someone else to take over the port. We'll make a post about it in a day or two.

Original Article

Skullgirls is another game with an interesting history of promises for a Linux port. It's another case of a developer publicly stating it, and then not delivering on it.

Now just something to note first is that they could have someone else now working on it, but it would be nice if the main guys would clarify it.

The developer was was supposed to be working on the Linux port posted a message in the Skullgirls steam forum:

Quoteeek, 88 messages. fire detected.

anyways, I haven't worked for L0 since the 21st. I don't know the status of any of the ports now, but they won't be by my hands.

I highly suggest not reading any other posts, as it's just full of users bickering about it. Some claim it was never promised, but going by the tweet below I find it highly amusing anyone can claim it wasn't.

Sad as they did publicly confirm the Linux client last year:

#Skullgirls is coming to #Linux! Support us and get a download code and more characters! http://t.co/642MqVir91

Their crowdfunding campaign for a DLC release last year also mentioned Linux in the platform rewards section, so that's another official notice of it. The campaign hit over $800K just for the DLC, so it's not like they don't have money.

We have reached out to them for comments. I say it time and time again: I just don't see what is so hard for developers to keep users informed.

Looks good, and my room-mate appreciates games that let her play as a girl and fighting games, shame about the delay though.

Skullgirls already has that taste of "Duke Nukem Forever" to me. But hey, only 12 years left until I can play it natively on Linux :D

Multiple sites, including Kotaku covered the Linux port, and their IndieGoGo page put "PC & Linux" as target platforms. Plus, the tweet you highlighted, Liam.

Anyone arguing that "Linux was never promised" is either a fool or an L0 employee. Another Fun Pimps-like debacle.

I am not a fan of games like this so I have no dog in this race, but I have helped fund other games that promise Linux, and they have delivered. I do understand, to a point, a delay between platform releases. But over a year? no way. It's time to deliver.

It's probably going to stay there a long while.

I just can't see why they need someone to VOLUNTEER for this. They asked for $150k in the Indiegogo campaign, got over $800k, yet still can't afford to pay for someone to port the game. They massively overshot the goal of making a DLC character, so they spent it on making 5, but why did they not allocate any of it to paying someone to bring it to Linux?

Because some people will never admit a mistake, but will drag it for as long as possible, until all the facts and promises are lost in obscurity, bad excuses, and pure fiction. Oh, I have seen it before. Not as rare as one might wish.
