This is unusual, the developers of a turned-based strategic survival game named Thea: The Awakening are giving away their Linux version.

QuoteSo, Khash mentioned in another thread that we are unable to support, or even test Thea on Linux, and sadly, nothing has changed here. But, we decided to make the Linux version, as it is, available to anyone who wants to play with it.

Now I will just say once more that we will not be supporting this version and we do not know how well it works as it is, but hey, if you want to check it out, its here and it's free.

If you decide to have a go at it, please do leave us some feedback. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be able to play with it ourselves and fix it up, but no promises!

Enjoy!

If you want to try it out, head over to the Steam topic for the download link. We won't put it here as it could change often.

About the game (Official)
Thea: The Awakening is a turn-based strategic survival game steeped in Slavic myth and monstrosity set after an apocalyptic force known only as The Darkness has engulfed the world. There are Strigas and Baba Yagas aplenty, but there are no heroes, no monster slayers, and no great armies capable of banishing them. You have only a few hopeless and starving survivors who are desperately trying to stay alive. You are their last and only true hope!

The game combines turn-based strategic gameplay with the tension and grit of a rogue-like, a captivating story you can uncover through a series of in-game events, and a unique combat system based on a complex card battle game.

Quoting: CaldazarYou're mistaken on this. They created an extra Linux branch and actually support it with updates following our feedback, which they answer promptly.

Ah my point didn't come across clearly. My point is that we are so small that they can't be bothered with grabbing the potential economical outcome from it. They sell their copy on the other platforms - presumably they'd do the same on our platform, had only the potential been big enough. And it's (apparently) not. Cause we're so small. And that stings.

It's cool that they still do it of course. But this candy is slightly bitter-sweet.

Got it to load fine, however i started the tutorial, and right when it was telling how to use WASD to look around in the map, it got stuck and wouldn't stop moving to the lower left of the screen.

Same issue here. I guess the trick is to just use the mouse for now (or forever, depending on if they update it).

Yeah, I get you, beggars getting a free meal, served with a pitying face.
Only that there wasn't a pitying face but one of respect in our capabilities as a gaming community, like we're MacGyver or something.

In my view it's more like a deal in this case or a challenge. Our reputation saved the day, that while we do not have the numbers, we might actually get a piece of software running on our computers that they created blindly and without any experience whatsoever.
Or so they thought. Turns out it was a pretty good shot they took. We had to do barely anything other than point out that AVPro Windows Media sucks.

To me, there's also a lesson in this: Not some hunting for Joe Sixpack ease of use number game won this uphill battle, but the very reputation as tinkerers the Linux platform already owns, that things fly here that would just plain crash on other platforms.

Read the full thread I linked to:
Linux build? - Here, have a branch, Password "IwantLinux2work"
Apple branch too? - "Nope. I have no apples at home unless they sponsor that thing"

Tell me that isn't just awesome, without any sting.

It's a known upstream bug caused by an old Unity version they use. They already promised to make a build with the newer version soon.

thanks for the post on this Liam, I never would have known this was happening otherwise. I really like turn based strategy games, that's like someone giving away free beer to me lol. since I'm on Manjaro right now I have all the standard 32 bit and 64 bit libs installed for games and such. The game fired up right away and has been working fine so far. I'll be sure to add some feedback on their forum post if I run into anything. I hope they make an official Linux release, so far from what I see this looks pretty stable. I've been running it on the 64 bit binary.

Note: don't forget to make the binaries executable, and i have the bug as well when using the keys for navigation it gets stuck moving down.

Loaded fine for me! So looks like Unity is getting a lot better.
