Dead Island Zombie Game Now Available On Linux For Some (updated)

By anchor - | Views: 73,556
Update: It should now be playable for all, and it is a native port.
Update 2: Virtual Programming have confirmed to GamingOnLinux in an email they did not do the port, so to settle this, it is not using eON.

We honestly have no idea who has done this port, as GamingOnLinux spoke to Techland previously who confirmed they are not doing the port and told us to speak to Deep Silver who never answer our emails or tweets.

Dead Island is the latest zombie game to grace Linux with its presence and helps build up our backlog of games.

About
Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

It seems it is not available for everyone just yet, so you may get a missing executable error:
QuoteFor most wondering why they still get missing executable: it is waiting for Techland to include the Linux files in all the various packages they have sold over the years.
If you bought https://store.steampowered.com/sub/14664/ or https://store.steampowered.com/sub/15205/ you can download it.

Thanks, johndrinkwater on reddit.

It is currently on sale too, so it's possibly it was supposed to be sorted ready for the sale.

Editor Note: We do advise holding off until the official announcement to avoid waiting and to be sure you count as a Linux sale. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I had been toying with Linux back when Doom3 was new, but I never tried to game on it. But the only game I can say with 100% certainty ran better for me in Linux than it did in windows was made with iD's tech5 engine so sadly it wasn't even native, I was using wine. Wolfenstein: The New Order. I was able to turn the settings up higher and still achieve an overall much more solid and high frame rate than in windows.

Quoting: iensensamaFirst off I have been running the game on my intel NUC D54250WYK (Haswell i5 with HD graphics 5000), it's not exactly a "gaming-rig" but still... In Windows I could play the game in 720p with most settings on high (no AA or AF), with a pretty respectable framerate somewhere in the range of 30-60 (I was amazed of how well the engine performed on low-end graphics, only beaten by the source engine I think). In the Linux version however, the game is stuttering around at 10-15 frames on the lowest possible graphics settings (and resolution).

I think we can attribute a lot of this to the inferior graphics drivers that intel provides for Linux (they are still impressive, just not as good as those available for Windows).

I have one of those stupid dual-graphics setups and now that I use Ubuntu exclusively, I am not impressed.

The integrated (Intel) side of the house works surprisingly well and is somewhat helped by Intel actually bothering to put some effort into updates/upgrades, though it's not very powerful (obviously!)... AMD on the other hand, is a whole other story.

AMD's support for their graphics cards under Linux-based operating systems is absolutely appalling and I've had enough - next time around, it's a single-graphics card setup, powered by NVIDIA!

I will never, ever use a product with AMD graphics again... Ever.

Been getting weird shadow redish / dark black areas all over the place. I have tried all the settings. This isn't the only game it happens with. It happens on darker textures in Borderlands 2, and the pre-sequel as well. I am running a Nvidia GTX 550Ti 2GB, with the latest drivers. Any idea?

Started playing this yesterday and I am pleased as punch. Performance is great, I have all the highest settings turned on. The only weirdness was that it defaulted to launching in windowed mode instead of fullscreen, but otherwise the experience was flawless.

No complaints here. I've never played it on Windows, but did play on PS3. Playing on Linux definitely beats the PS3 in terms of performance and quality.

Highly recommended, if you're a zombie game nut. Honestly, the game itself is basically just Left4Dead2 on a South Pacific island....but being Australian, that appeals to me.
