Shadowrun: Hong Kong, A New Game & Kickstarter From Harebrained Schemes

By - | Views: 12,418

Fans of the previous Shadowrun games have flocked like mad sheep to the new Shadowrun: Hong Kong Kickstarter, so this is most likely going to be funded.

About the game

HONG KONG. A stable and prosperous port of call in a sea of chaos, warfare, and political turmoil. The Hong Kong Free Enterprise Zone is a land of contradictions - it is one of the most successful centers of business in the Sixth World, and home to one of the world’s most dangerous sprawl sites. A land of bright lights, gleaming towers, and restless spirits where life is cheap and everything is for sale.

The lure of a quick payday draws you from Seattle into the neon glow of Victoria Harbor… and into a corporate conspiracy nearly thirty years in the making. A terrifying threat looms on the horizon - a supernatural force that corrupts and consumes everything it touches. Dragged into the shadows of Kowloon City, you will need to forge new connections and gain "face" to survive.

Hong Kong contains fantastic elements for a new Shadowrun setting: an underworld of triads, tongs, and gangs to navigate, wild magic to harness, and bleeding edge cybertech to equip. Plus, Hong Kong’s culture is steeped in "guanxi" - a network of influence and relationships based upon a combination of social status, and prestige. All of these elements add up to a great new setting for running the shadows.

There will be no tablet version, so it's taking full advantage of PC. That's what I like to hear!

At time of writing it's verrrrrry close to hitting the initial target (quick check, oh it's funded), so I don't think we have any worries. The best thing is that Linux is supported as standard.

We never suggest backing anything on Kickstarter nowadays, but when it is already funded, and they have a good track record...maybe.

I should really play through Returns and Dragonfall now...

I must admit: I am an absolute nerd. I was for many years and long before it was "cool" to be (a little) nerdy. Well, I'm not the average geek, not even the average software engineering student, but I know about every nerdy universe out there (apart from Star Trek, well I know stuff about Star Trek, I just never fell into it)

I know a lot about Doctor Who, Hyboria, Middle Earth, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Stargate, Westeros ... and so many more. But I never had the time to fall in love with Shadowrun.

I should, though. I got the first one in a humble bundle and the second was a christmas gift. Argh... if only the day had more than 24 hours!

*Sigh* I liked SR and loved Dragonfall. Unfortunately Kickstarter runs through Amazon, which is terrible, so I'll have to wait until a site that does allow either Paypal or Bitcoin comes along.

Quoting: DrMcCoyYou can just jump straight into Dragonfall. Apart from a few NPC that cameo in Dragonfall, there's not much overlap between Dead Man's Switch and Dragonfall.
Thank you! Judging from the comments people have been making when the subject comes up, and from reviews as well, Shadowrun: Dragonfall appears to be a considerably better game than Shadowrun Returns.

I can understand some people's reluctance to use Kickstarter but there's almost as much risk in buying a $60 AAA these days. With Kickstarter you spend closer to $15 and help fund a game that might otherwise not get made. With the $60 AAA game you usually end up beta testing their latest buggy release wondering why you trusted them. Both have risks. The Kickstarter may not get made, the AAA game may be crap. I'm a lover of the indie scene and think they're doing the best work right now. If I can scrounge up $15 in the next 33 days you can bet I'm backing this.

And in this case, they already have the funds to release their 3rd shadowrun game. They're asking for extra money so they can make the game even better. If you enjoyed the last two SR games, then I don't see why it would hurt to donate $15 dollars now.

Long live Dante! Dragonfall got me interested in RPGs again, so this will be on the list for sure. Currently getting close to 500k funded - not bad.

I bought SR and S: DF and I'm definitely buying this once the paypal link shows up. Also backed PoE and T:ToN and even though I missed backing Wasteland 2, just got it on Christmas steam sale for the same price so I'll definitely have a lot of cRPG's on my plate this year!
