Quoting: mrdeathjrStrange in my case overlay works since 1.7.38, nvidia drivers stay correctly installed (direct rendering stay enable???) something more in my case use xfce
“glxinfo|grep "direct rendering"” says "Yes", and I’m also using Xfce (with or without Compton: no change).

Are you playing in a fresh wine prefix with nothing installed or configured? I see on this guide that the person is installing some fonts, vcrun2005, physx and d3dx9. Also they are configuring the direct draw renderer, video memory size and offscreen rendering mode. (I haven’t tried all of this yet.)

Also something I need to do is launch steam with -no-dwrite or I’m not seeing any text.

PS: Steam overlay definitely not working, neither in Mirror’s Edge nor in Burnout Paradise.

Very strange, gamersonlinux guide are very detailed

In my case only install apps provided for steam (vrious as your said physx (regular and legacy for older games*), directxjun2010, vc redistributables (2005sp1,2008sp1,2010sp1), net framework 2.0sp2, net framework 3.5sp1 and net framework 4.0

*In special cases like as medal of honor airborne is needed install first physx 7 and after physx legacy and at least regular physx (some cases need some fix like as physx on infernal game)

Video memory size can be adjusted in wine regedit with your vga memory quantity (in my case 2048mb)

In steam no-dwrite must be works for most cases, this is more strange in your case, in my case some time ago put video about how to entry without see characters

However if you install wine using ppa (i only install wine1.7:i386) them install something things like fonts-droid, fonts-liberation, binfmt-support, fonts-horai-umefont, fonts-unfonts-core, ttf-ms-corefonts-installer, fonts-wqy-microhei
