Nvidia release Linux beta driver with Vulkan

By - | Views: 30,811
Well, this is awkward, Nvidia have also released a driver on Linux with Vulkan support. This leaves AMD to be the only desktop GPU vendor not to have one ready for testing on Linux. When amdgpu is out though, AMD will be back in the game.

Neil TrevettIf you’re a GeForce gamer, you already have what you need to take advantage of what the Vulkan API can do. If you’re a developer, you will now have the choice of a new tool that will give you more control, and greater performance, on a broad range of devices.

Our support for Vulkan, on the day it launches, not just on multiple platforms, but in cutting-edge games such as The Talos Principle, has some of the industry’s most respected observers taking notice.

“To be able to play a game like The Talos Principle on the same day an API launches, is an unheard of achievement,” said Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research. “NVIDIA’s multi-platform compatibility and fully conformant driver support across many operating systems is a testament to the company’s leadership role in Vulkan’s development.”

While waiting for AMD

Quoting: SabunI am severely disappointed. Vulkan is AMD's brainchild. They have no excuse to be behind this time.

It looks like they didn't even have a contingency plan (proprietary driver). Now I cannot trust them when they say they might be able to support 300 series cards and older with AMDGPU. Vulkan was supposed to be supported via their proprietary driver, yet here we are with nothing.

Why does it matter if AMDGPU supports more than just GCN 1.2? Vulkan support is tied to AMDGPU now apparently.

According to devs they never said AMDGPU supports only GCN 1.2/1.1. Vulkan support to be tied with AMDGPU was known for 2 months already. And first Vulkan driver will be binary, sitting on the top of AMDGPU.

You are only learning now that you can't trust AMD's promises? This is the reason I've only bought NVIDIA for as long as I can remember. This is nothing new, and I don't care what the AMD diehard believers say. They've proven themselves over and over and over again; exactly what they're proving, I have not fully decided, but it's either disdain for Linux or complete ineptitude.

I took a leap of faith with Vulkan. I really believed they'd change their Linux support behaviour, given that they had knowledge of Mantle and Vulkan long before their competitors. With so much edge, I honestly thought they'd pull this one through. It is my mistake this time. There won't be a next time.

There was supposed to be a day-one proprietary driver for Linux, yet we have nothing right now. There is no excuse anymore.

I'm interested about the intel drivers and which minimum CPU you need.

I follow this tutorial ( https://linuxgamecast.com/2016/02/installing-and-testing-vulkan-on-ubuntu/ ) , and finally, after a lot of problems and dependecies, I could compile the chopper demo, but when I execute gl_vk_chopper I have a pretty black window.
