Not long after requesting Linux testers for Orwell [Steam, Official Site], the surveillance simulation game, it's now officially available on Linux.

From the announcement:
QuoteWe have done some limited testing with OS X and Ubuntu, and so far all of our results have been great. That doesn't mean you will not find issues at home; with such a varying landscape of operating systems and hardware configurations, we are expecting some of you to have issues. We have opened up sticky threads for both Mac and Linux - please put any issues you find in there with as much information as possible, and we will aim to help you as quickly as we can.

About the game
Big Brother has arrived - and it’s you. Investigate the lives of citizens to find those responsible for a series of terror attacks. Information from the internet, personal communications and private files are all accessible to you. But, be warned, the information you supply will have consequences…

Orwell is a new governmental security program that has the power to survey the online presence of every person in The Nation. It can monitor all personal communications and access any computer. To preserve the privacy of citizens, human researchers examine the data Orwell finds and decide which pieces of information should be passed on to the security forces, and which should be rejected. I've played Orwell some 8 hours this week-end, and it's a very good game (a sort of interactive fiction where the game's and in-game's interfaces melt, with a good story)! :)

This has nothing to do with the game (which looks really interesting) -- but is anyone else irked by the everyday connotations that have stuck on the poor author's name? "Orwellian ... as Orwell said", etc. And now in this game we have a 'government security program' named Orwell.

It's as if the poor guy invented or advocated nefarious means of surveillance, thought control through impoverished language, and so on.

If anything, an 'Orwellian' (god...) name for that sort of surveillance program would be something like "Digital Privacy", or "Right to Anonymity", etc.
"Doublespeak", you know....

When an author gets big enough his name gets connotations. Tolkien for fantasy, even though he was a human living on earth and not in some other land. Stephen King is linked to horror, but he is a very nice guy. Nothing wrong here mate, it's the individual's fault if he doesn't read Orwell and doesn't get the reference.
