Steam Play Proton 5.0-5 is out with updated OpenVR, Vulkan and fixes

By - | Views: 22,442

Valve published Proton 5.0-5 for Steam Play which includes some helpful additions and bug fixes, should help you play those Windows-only games while quarantined.

Quite a small release overall, here's what's changed:

  • Fix crash in some games introduced in Proton 5.0-4.
  • Fix networking error in Granblue Fantasy: Versus.
  • Support for latest OpenVR SDKs.
  • Add support for new Vulkan extensions used by some recent titles.

You can see the full Proton changelog on GitHub. Doing a little of my own testing with it this morning, it all seems to be working quite well.

Like the HUD used in the above shot? That's the excellent Linux gaming overlay, MangoHud, you can see it in action in our latest article on it. Certainly makes keeping an eye on performance a lot easier.

Bethesda probably actively went to ID studios and tossed out the window any Linux machines they saw.

Honestly it's probably less cost and effort to just release a native Linux port of Doom Eternal as they pretty much have that already. Silly id/beth though.

How can no effort beat effort ? Beth dont want to port to linux so free ports via proton beat no expense whatsoever that way you get even more people buying your game.

No effort for iD means effort for the Proton team and vice versa.

yes but the Proton team is being funded by Valve so again wheres is the motivation to port the game

It's already ported. A native Linux version already exists.

Doom Eternal? Really? What are your sources?

It's on Stadia.

And before anyone jumps in to tell me "it's not the same thing", it very much is. In fact, it is generally recommended for Stadia developers to get the game working on regular Linux first *before* adding in all the Stadia gubbins.
