Stylish literary mystery Sarawak will be in the Steam Game Festival

By - | Views: 13,926

We have another confirmed game that will have a Linux demo available for the Steam Game Festival, and it's the very clever and stylish looking interactive fiction Sarawak.

It was announced only recently and covered here on GOL back in April, with a curious setting split between Oxford and Borneo. They announced yesterday on Twitter, that they will also be putting up a demo for the SGF that runs between June 9 -15. See their original trailer below:

Expect great Linux support from it, since the game engine was developed on Linux too. They even sent over a preview build to us ahead of time and I can happily tell you it's something you're going to need to keep on your radar. I'm not going to spoil a single thing about it right now of course, especially given it's a literary mystery - you really need to go in blind.

I've played numerous text adventures, visual novels and everything in between but Sarawak is of a different sort. Mixing in a deep narrative that forms a mystery adventure, you will also be solving various puzzles and hopefully make the right choices when they come up. Cowleyfornia Studios, the husband and wife team from Oxford - UK, say their aim is to blur the lines "between narrative games and conventional literature".

Follow and wishlist Sarawak on Steam to be ready to experience it yourself with the Steam Game Festival next month. On top of this we also know of DRAG, ASYLUM and Nine Noir Lives. As more get confirmed, we will let you know.

I don't want to be polemic, but everytime i read "stylish" on a GOL headline, i expect something with schematic graphic and poor graphic content.
My main language is italian, so i went to learn better what stylish means in english, and here's what i found:
Google:
"fashionably elegant and sophisticated."
Cambridge English Dictionary:
"1. of a high quality in appearance, design, or behaviour
2. of a high quality in appearance…."

I don't really think Sarawak can be defined "stylish".
Is it just me?

Like everything, it's subjective. You are free to disagree but if I think something is, I will say it so :). It's just another way of saying it looks good, and I think it really does. Again, subjective, since you would first need to appreciate such a literary adventure.

To my eye, the game's got plenty of style.

Here you go, another definition just pulled from a search result:
Quoting: DDGConforming to the current fashion; modish. synonym: fashionable.
Having style in aspect or quality; conformable or conforming to approved style or taste; strikingly elegant; fashionable; showy: as, stylish dress or manners; a stylish woman; a stylish house.
adj.
Having style or artistic quality; given to, or fond of, the display of style; highly fashionable; modish.
Style is defined as the way something is done, said, expressed, or performed. It implies an individual signature to that expression. Stylish is the adjective of style. In this context the art is said to be stylish because it has a distinctive appearance that differentiates it from other styles, even if just a little. So, if something is stylish it is presenting its own unique expression of that thing. A game could said to be stylish if its appearance is distinctive and different from a common generic look.

The Cambridge definition, in my opinion, is colored through heavy cultural bias that "style" is connected to and defined by the rich and upper class.

So is the style in this game, I think. While there's a visible date on one of the newspapers in the trailer of 2020, it seems to borrow heavily from an upper-class colonial aesthetic from about the late 1800's.
