Grab a coffee and come read the latest Sunday Section - May 30

By - | Views: 11,830

Time to round-up some of the smaller items we unfortunately didn't get time to go over this week, grab a coffee and relax with a short read of some good stuff.

First up - Flatpak 1.11.1 officially solves the issue of newer Proton versions not running correctly inside Steam Flatpak, look out for distribution updates. Linux gaming with compatibility layers just got even better - nice!

On the subject of compatibility layers for running Windows games on Linux, the community-built Proton-6.9-GE-2 has been released as a quick follow-up to solve issues with Resident Evil Village. If you want to know more about Proton and Steam Play, see our dedicated area.

The KDE camp have been continuing their mass clean-up of Plasma to improve all aspects of it. Developer Nate Graham released the usual blog post to go over recent works done. One of the huge and exciting bits from this week is that Plasma has seen a major reliability improvement for Wayland on NVIDIA hardware!

7 Days to Die got a Alpha 19.5 release bringing Twitch Integration along with: Voxel mesh pooling, Chunk decal and model dither fading, Distant terrain decreases mesh detail when farther, a gfx dtmaxlod console command and also allowing selection of steering mode on controllers by pressing DPad down. The performance improvements should make it smoother than ever. You can buy it from Humble Store and Steam.

Excited by the upcoming first major upgrade for Valheim? Well, you're in for a wait. They're sticking to their "when it's ready" approach and not offering timelines oh, and they also bought a horse - but no we're not getting horses officially in the game. They say the Hearth and Home update is coming along with "many new items and mechanics being finalized". You can buy it from Humble Store and Steam.

Want to play Among Us on Linux? Epic Games are currently giving it away, and it can run with Wine quite well. Downloading it is easy with the likes of the Heroic Games Launcher. It's not supported though, so the usual caveats apply: it could break, and they don't need to fix it. You might need to mess with the region settings to have it properly work with others, apparently double-clicking can help there, weird.

Tesla (yes, that Tesla) are advertising a "Linux Game Development" position which mentions the need to understand the likes of "Linux, Mesa, Vulkan, OpenGL, Proton/Lutris, Wine, etc.". Will be interesting to see what they're up to, but it's most likely related to improving their in-vehicle entertainment systems.

Quick reminders

Hope you all have/had a good weekend!

Tesla?I have some suspicions. Does Elon Musk fund gol.com with a couple million of dollars? Or is this fake news?
Only master(Liam) knows the truth. Well what I'm talking about? This was a nightmare joke of course! Jokes aside. It will be very interesting what Tesla will come up with. Hopefully we see it benefitting linux gaming greatly. Maybe the future Tesla will have a gaming centre too!Hardly but one can only dream of it....

Tesla are pushing the self-driving vehicle. So . . . once that vehicle is driving itself, what you gonna do until you get somewhere? Game on Linux, perhaps.

Wow... I haven't played that in over a year I think, and it *look's completely different and super modern and polished now!*

Quoting: GuestI read that job spec out of interest, and the wording alone would make me stay far, far away from working the company even if I were in that country.
Tesla doesn't have a great rep for working conditions. Musk seems to think working for the great cool vision should be enough reward that you shouldn't worry about little things like massive overtime or being exposed to deadly diseases.
Which, to be fair, does still put him a step up from all the bastards who want you to expose yourself to deadly diseases and workplace injury in the name of great cool visions like . . . butchering meat, or moving shit in a warehouse.

You might be spot-on, if I'm interpreting this correctly:
Quoting: "Tesla job advertisement"Some of you might have heard, our dear technoking is bullish on games and making an awesome platform for all gamers in Tesla vehicles. The latest Model S on our website can give you a hint of what we're aiming for in terms of platform capability (sorry, can't divulge much more for now). The Tesla infotainment OS and platform software are based on a standard Linux, so of course, we're interested in helping the gaming community make Linux gaming excellent.
Does this mean Teslas run on Linux, or just the "infotainment OS and platform software"?

Tesla has been teasing their in vehicle infotainment system as a super fast console for a while now. I think it is some beefed-up ARM+Nvidia system? Anyways, cool that they are using Linux for it.
