Valve reportedly developing a Half-Life shooter-strategy hybrid

By - | Views: 23,214

There's been some reports circulating thanks to YouTuber Tyler McVicker (previously known as Valve News Network) that goes into some detail about what Valve is up to. Seems like we might get an RTS/FPS hybrid for the Steam Deck. It seems that Half-Life 3 continues to not be a thing too.

Sounds like it will be called Citadel, or perhaps Half-Life: Citadel and will be "a co-operative, competitive, asymmetric, third-person, first-person, RTS, FPS, shooter-hybrid thing that takes place in the Half-Life universe" according to McVicker. Matches seem like they will be some sort of battle between NPCs, with you earning things to give to them using a wave-based system for the battling. The video states that Source 2 has been significantly upgraded with a new lighting system, and new NPC systems too. It's a lot to take in and sounds pretty wild.

You can listen to McVicker's latest video on it below explaining more after the original video that got picked up across the internet:

The key thing to remember is that Valve often works on projects that never see a release. They flick between things, often prototyping and some little hints end up shipping inside other games, which is often where McVicker and others get their information from. Nothing at all is confirmed, it's pure speculation but fun regardless as we're always keen to know what Valve has coming next. In a statement to IGN, Valve reminded people that McVicker has "no inside information about what goes on at Valve".

Not gonna lie, I read this line and wondered if someone programmed an AI to spitball "popular game concepts"

I preferred Sacrifice to the Battlezones. I think the silliness really helped.

I haven't played Sacrifice so I can't comment on it, but much as I loved both Battlezones as a kid they absolutely have very clunky control schemes and doing most stuff now (I have the remastered versions) feels like swimming through molasses.

Yeah, BZ1 I really struggled with control wise and while 2 was nice, it was kinda in that weird time when everyone did 3D, but the quality and lack of computing power meant the 3D environments and characters were kinda desolate.

Sacrifice had the same problem with environments, but had a lot of (goody) character, especially compared to BZ2, which I felt was a little bland compared to the cool industrial/cold war theme of BZ1.

Yeah, I think certainly a part of why I liked it was that as a kid I was obsessed with the solar system, so getting to drive around on different planets and moons was like catnip to young me. Also I think the Scion heavy tank from BZ2 is possibly my favorite ship design of all time (I also loved the Scion morphing vehicles in general). But I totally agree about environments being sparse and a lack of interesting characters.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what Valve comes out with and if they can come up with a better control scheme.

This was made years ago as a HL2 mod called "Overwatch".

It was freaking amazing and some friends and I spent many hours playing it online. I'm hoping they use it as inspiration in some way or another, or have got the original devs on board for this!

All I want is a proper continuation of the Half-Life series.
