ScummVM 2.8.0 released with new game support and plenty of upgrades

Just before the end of 2023 the ScummVM team released ScummVM 2.8.0 bringing with it support for running various new games along with improvements to other already supported classics.

This release brings redone RetroArch support, redone Atari support, big improvements to AGS support, support for Chinese and Japanese game variants in many game engines, rewritten sound code for the SCUMM Humongous Entertainment games "making them flawless", the Broken Sword 1 game engine got various improvements to make it "absolutely faithful to the original". Plus newly supported games in ScummVM 2.8.0 are:

  • Escape From Hell
  • Gadget: Invention Travel and Adventure
  • Gobliiins 5
  • The Excavation of Hob's Barrow
  • Kingdom: The Far Reaches
  • Might and Magic Book One
  • Muppet Treasure Island
  • Nancy Drew: The Final Scene
  • Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion
  • Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill
  • Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned for Danger
  • Nancy Drew: Treasure in the Royal Tower
  • Primordia
  • Reah: Face the Unknown
  • Schizm: Mysterious Journey
  • Shardlight
  • Strangeland
  • Syberia and Syberia II (macOS versions only)
  • Technobabylon
  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Whispers of a Machine
  • Wrath of the Gods and four other Director titles.
  • 14 AGS titles by Stranga and Cloak and Dagger

Great to see such impressive progress to keep a huge amount of classic games running well on modern systems.

Being able to play the Syberia games natively is probably the best xmas gift this year. I've dug about 6 hours in it already.

I was actually about to start playing The Dark Eye today. Now I need to ponder. To ScummVM or not to ScummVM?
You know everyone's gonna be busting out them Nancy Drew games now. XD
Soon it will run any game, retro or contemporary alike 😛

Good question. It sports Platinum rating on ProtonDB through Proton so I guess you can stick with it. Or try both.

I think laziness and Proton wins this time.

But I guess it wont be long before Roberta adds support for the titles on Steam and I shall go back to pondering...

Some of those, like Hob's Barrow, are quite recent releases, so that's pretty awesome to see (even if they are using an already supported engine - I think AGS).
