The Bazzite Deck 44 release for handhelds and TV PCs was a huge change for the popular gaming focused version of Linux, which sadly came with lots of issues.

I noticed the WiFi on my Legion Go being a bit quirky - hopefully they'll keep pushing out fixes quickly so it doesn't sour the Linux experience for people who upgraded. Announcing the Bazzite 44 Hotfix in a forum post, their developers reiterated how it was a huge undertaking, and needed to keep the project healthy and more inline with the broader Linux gaming ecosystem.

Their team mentioned some of the points getting fixed up:

highlights
  • Steam Deck is now the default emulated controller device for handhelds in game mode to resolve issues with Gyro (Legion Go 1 still incoming)
    • Users experiencing Gyro issues should make sure their controller target in OGUI is set to “Steam Deck”.
    • Users experiencing issues with desktop controls can fix it by opening Steam and going to Settings → Controls → Desktop Layout. We recommend binding X to open keyboard.
    • Refer to our helpful guide on how to open OGUI here.
  • Latest version of InputPlumber with fixes for numerous GPD devices, MSI Claw 7/8/AI/A1M/BZ2E, and other devices.
  • Touch screen gestures in Game Mode have been restored.
  • Fix for high CPU usage on some handhelds.
  • Fix for memory leak on Intel ARC GPUs.
  • Fixes for sleep-state issues on Nvidia-LTS.
  • Fixes for graphical issues on Nvidia-Deck (Gamemode will no longer artifact, we’ll ship this patch for as long as we’re able to).
  • For the first time you can now set your Desktop as the default session on Deck images
    • This option is available in Bazzite Portal, or can be used via steamosctl.
  • We’re also testing fixes to help with the display blanking some HTPC users are seeing with some displays
    • These issues are related to the new HDMI 2.1 VRR implementation and fixes will be sent upstream.

They noted how they are "committed to continuing that work through Bazzite 44, into Bazzite 45, and beyond".

As someone who spends 99% in desktop but still likes gamemode for a few quirky games, I'm quite pleased.

Love Bazzite on the Deck. When I go to my parents' flat it's great to dock it and use the desktop mode as well. Although setting up work stuff is a bit of a pain on an immutable system, if Nobara had a GNOME desktop image I think I'd prefer a more traditional OS on it.

Has there been some doubt about that commitment?

Bazzite is arguably the most well-rounded gaming platform in existence. That said, installing Fedora Silverblue instead of Bazzite reduces system complexity that can be unnecessary potential points of failure when you don't need gaming features, such as pre-installed Waydroid.

Since a while I have issues with bazzite on my Legion Go.
It happened already before the 44 release: the device overheats.
Through Handheld Deamon (HHD) I could set the fan to max speed though.

With bazzite 44 now HHD is gone, I haven't found an easy way to set fan to full speed.
I couldn't operate the keyboard in Desktop mode at all, will have to check the new update for that.
I had to install LegionGoRemapper for Decky to be able to change the RGB lighting of the controllers, which was part of the funcionality of HHD.
Also I haven't found a way to set max charge to 80%, which was part of HHD before. I found an entry that said it should now be done via KDE's power settings, but I haven't found that setting.
Also it was easy to boot into Windows via HHD (I know, I know, yet firmware updates...)

Though an update of the deck variant of bazzite is nice to see, losing convenient functionality is a bit meh.

I don't know about KDE but I know you can do it with TLP. I use it to control battery charging on all of my laptops.
