Bethesda finally fix the Fallout 4 on-screen keyboard crashing on Steam Deck / SteamOS

Oh my gosh, finally. Such a simple issue that has been a problem for years is finally fixed. Bethesda just updated Fallout 4 and below is everything that's changed.

They just need to do Skyrim next, which has had the exact same bug also since forever. They do have a Skyrim update coming sometime soon, so fingers crossed on that too.

On the Steam Deck with SteamOS (and so likely the Steam Machine too) - bringing up the on-screen keyboard would just entirely crash the game. It's really surprising it has remained "Verified" by Valve with such a ridiculous bug, even though The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is rightfully set as "Unsupported" but that's Valve for you - Steam Deck Verified certainly isn't without issues.

Fallout 4

Now, it should actually deserve that Verified rating and hopefully soon Skyrim will get the fix, and then get Verified too.

I still wonder why Bethesda is so incompetent and reluctant to keep fixing/supporting their existing games, it's like when Starfield (which I actually like!) came out and the voice was too loud they probably internally wondered "Hey, they're calling for fixes and updates, how's that supposed to work anyways? Anyone ever did that yet? Noone? Oh well then we probably need to figure out.." And their third party studios like the one that did the Oblivion Remaster is not any better. I mean they never get their guts together to fix Skyrim VR / Fallout VR for example for the Valve Index controllers where in contrast Hello Games just put out one patch after another for No Man's Sky (just mentioning that here explicitly cause of VR support). If they would get some ongoing love they would be really great VR games which could still serve as a must have but no you have to mod the hell out of them to even support the basics like proper input / controller mapping.

In my experience as a 30 year old fan of Bethesda's games, I find that increasingly, especially over the past 10 or so years - there are few companies who have such contempt for their own game properties and the people who enjoy them as Bethesda.

If I remember correctly (haven't played it in a while), in Skyrim SE there is a way to avoid the crash. I think if you start the game, open the Creation Club, and then open the search from the Creation Club, then the onscreen keyboard works correctly. This fix only works until you restart the game, though.

They are definitely slow about taking action. I recently took advantage of a phenomenal deal on the GOG version of Skyrim SE only to discover that, since the last update, the GOG version has suffered from a VRAM memory leak that Bethesda has yet to fix. The Skyrim community had to step in and provide a solution:

As near as I can tell from an admittedly partial reading of the 9-page thread, this issue has been going on for nearly 2 years. Way to go, Bethesda!

Overall, I agree with your sentiments. However, while Bethesda's patch support is clearly still poor, they have improved somewhat. It used to be much worse in the Morrowind days - especially when you compare their support to the patch frequency and overall amount of patches of other developers from the same time period. Bethesda has always been notorious for their buggy games and poor patch support.
