Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now being kept up to date for modern platforms in the GOG Preservation Program. ICYMI: GOG confirmed to GamingOnLinux that GOG Galaxy is coming to Linux.

Remakes can be good - but sometimes nothing beats the classics and now this is another game in GOG's growing library that should stand the test of time a little bit better.

In the press release sent to GamingOnLinux the GOG team said:

"Our team has gone deep into the sands of the original Scimitar engine, rebuilding our early experimental work into a lightweight wrapper designed to address the challenges of running this 2003 classic on modern hardware.

The result brings a host of improvements without changing the experience at the heart of the game. The Prince can now properly explore modern widescreen and ultrawide displays, with customizable camera scaling that preserves the same vertical view across different aspect ratios. You can also lock the game to your preferred frame rate, keep your mouse confined to the game window when using multiple monitors, and adjust FOV and other settings on the fly through a new in-game overlay.

After all these years, the Prince’s journey deserves to remain playable for years to come. We hope these improvements make it easier than ever to step into the sands, rewind time, and experience one of gaming’s most memorable adventures on modern hardware!"

From the changelog on what GOG actually did:

Key changes
  • Implemented a lightweight wrapper to resolve modern hardware incompatibilities.
  • Added native widescreen and ultrawide support for all modern resolutions and aspect ratios.
  • Implemented camera scaling that automatically adjusts the field of view (FOV) based on monitor aspect ratio.
  • Added a multi-monitor mouse lock option to confine the cursor to the game window.
  • Added an FPS limiter to lock the frame rate to a chosen value.
  • Introduced a lightweight, real-time in-game overlay (press F11 to open, ESC to close) for instant adjustments to FPS limits and FOV multipliers.
  • Locked the main menu to its original 4:3 bounds to preserve hard-coded UI assets.
  • Capped the manual FOV slider at roughly 110% on ultrawide displays to prevent engine stretching and graphical glitches.
  • Verified stability.

You can grab it on the GOG.com store.

I remember thoroughly enjoying this game. If it was tied to 4:3, then it must be older than I remember.
I know there are two follow-up games to finish the story, hope they can add these too.

I'm happy that GoG is going back to their roots, as there are a lot of good old games that need to be preserved. Makes me feel like I should give them a try again.

This was abit of a pain to setup previously so hopefully this makes it much easier

No modern controller support though?

That's good news. I'm very likely to get it from GoG just for this. Although the "original" one on Steam can still technically run, it's a real pain.

Sands of Time is a good game. Back in the days when Ubisoft was a respected name.

I want to say Prince of Persia was originally a Broderbund franchise. Yep; Sands of Time was the reboot.

Jordan Mechner's original platform game was amazing for the time. I suck at platformers but I've always had a special place in my heart for this one. 🥰
