How to Fish is another brilliantly funny online co-op game

How to Fish is another sudden indie sensation that released recently on Steam, bringing friends together to do some completely ridiculous fishing. Note: personal purchase.

We decided to pick up a copy ourselves and have been blasting through hour after hour on it, and there's been a lot of laughs over here at GamingOnLinux. One of the stupidest experiences we've had recently (in the nice way). You see, it's a fishing game - but with knives, guns and explosives in an open-world environment with some funny physics and ridiculous looking characters.

The setup - while on a boating trip you crash into a small island. With your boat destroyed, you have to work your way back up by learning how to fish. It is a lot easier said than done, because plenty of the bigger fish like to literally fight back. There's little fish to eat and earn monies, and then bigger fish to fry with guns and explosives but they can be quite the challenge. Like a Piranha boss that rapidly flops around, spewing-out smaller Piranha — it turns into comedy gold as you and friends frantically fire off everything you can to take these sea creatures down.

Slap to revive

It also has one of the funniest revive mechanics in a game, one that made us both laugh quite loudly. As long as one player is still up during a boss fight, they can run over and pick you up and slap you in the face a few times to bring you back to life. It's super funny every time, especially so when you're trying to avoid whatever big sea creature is trying to eat you.

Hilarious to see a Seagull swoop down and pick up the body of your downed friends too, that was also a big shock-laugh.

Some of the boss fights really are tough too. The first one especially when you're just learning the ropes and you only have the most basic weapons like the Knife and Knuckle Dusters - took us a good few attempts to actually do it.

Once you're done on an island, hop in the boat to go find another and repeat. We've died a lot, sometimes just because of our own idiocy but there's never a dull moment because even just the basic loop of the game is relaxing fun to keep fishing, selling and upgrading your equipment. Add into that the chance to get one of the rarer coloured fish, that look a bit weird, and you can stick them into a slot machine to grab various types of skins for your weapons and tools - so there's plenty to work towards too.

A real gem to go and pick up. It's so stupid it's brilliant.

It has amassed over 12,000 user reviews on Steam already with a deserved Very Positive rating. They also just recently announced over 1 million players - seriously impressive.

Tested on the SteamOS Steam Machine with Proton 11, the game has been performing brilliantly. They do need to improve the UI for controller support, as it's a bit difficult to tell in the game option menus what you're actually selecting along with making it easier to change sensitivity - but that's been my only issue with it.

Review Score: 4 / 5 - Great

A friend of mine got me this over the weekend because he was excited to try it out – I hadn't heard of it yet, but I'm now looking forward to when we get to play it.
