Valve just launched the latest Proton Experimental update to improve gaming on Linux / SteamOS, Steam Deck and Steam Machine - here's all that's changed. The last update we covered was on August 8th.

The what — Proton Experimental is a compatibility layer to run Windows games on Linux systems. This one is like their testing ground for future stable numbered version Proton updates. You can install any version of Proton by just searching for "Proton" in your Steam Library. Check out the GamingOnLinux Guide to all the different Proton versions if you're confused.

For August 18th all the changes are below:

now playable
  • City Car Driving
  • Korea. IL-2 Series
  • The Heroic Legend of America: Second Revolutionary War

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

bug fixes
  • Fixed Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and The Last of Us Part II showing Gnome's top bar in fullscreen mode.
  • Fixed The Unfinished Swan locking up after opening the book.
  • Fixed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora not detecting game controllers.
  • Fixed middle mouse button not being able to move camera in Company of Heroes 3.
  • Fixed some input issues occurring after changing focus between the game and the launcher in Arma 3 on gamescope.
  • Fixed the main menu of The I of the Dragon being non-interactable with the mouse cursor.
  • Fixed Experimental regressions:
    • Elisa: The Innkeeper - Prequel is playable again.
  • Fixed Proton 11 regression:
    • CEG-using games should no longer take extra time to start.
    • Command & Conquer: Generals should no longer have graphical glitches in the menu.

Is there a specific bug this solved you're happy to see, or are you waiting on something specific? Let us know in the comments.

We're currently waiting on Proton 11.0-2 releasing which has a Release Candidate you can test.

City Car Driving
It was playable before, I think. With a steering wheel and pedals. Very fun driving sim if you want to learn how drive 🤓
