Good for players on Linux / SteamOS and modders - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is now free from Easy Anti-Cheat. See over 250 games with anti-cheat and their status for Linux / SteamOS on our dedicated page.

You do still have to deal with Denuvo Anti-tamper and the Ubisoft Connect launcher, which is a massive nuisance. I decided to pick it up to test how it runs on the Steam Machine. I legally purchased it from Steam and…

Ubisoft Connect couldn't verify I owned it

Oh, okay then. Third-party launchers with DRM checks on Steam are really infuriating. I really do wish Valve had some rules in place for things like this instead of just allowing publishers to do whatever they like to get in your way. The launcher has no gamepad support either - so it was quite a big nuisance to get it logged in.

Anyway, a good while later and a few retries and Ubisoft eventually decided I did actually purchase it. I won't say "own" it, since you don't own it, you just get a license. But, that's an argument for a different time.

Next issue - their Steam Input Gamepad profile is totally broken. For some reason it has the right joystick setup incorrectly. You cannot aim while doing anything. You have to go into Steam Input, and change it over to specifically Camera.

After that, finally, you can actually play - and on the Steam Machine on the High preset it really does run very smoothly. And it does still look pretty good for an older game.

Finally. It's actually one of the better ubisoft titles and I've been playing it for some time, usually with friends (got 80 hours on it or something).

I'm glad it's out.... 9 years after its release it would be about god damn time... The game should have never had EAC (nor that lame excuse of having a multiplayer to introduce EAC BS) in the first place. It was a fine solo offline game... And then they started to sell XP Boost, multiplayer BS stuff... No wonder you'd need anticheat to " protect your dear microtransactions that people don't give a flying F about ". Imagine if they just wanted to enjoy the game and give themselves XP boost or other stuff to have less grind to do and spend less time on your game... naaah can't let them do that, they shouldn't enjoy the game as they want, they should give us money for XP boost and stuff...

That greed even led to the " sequel " Breakpoint being a fully online-server-checked game where you couldn't play for more than 15min if you didn't have Internet, and they made sure to " justify " it by just straight up removing what was part of the core gameplay which was having a squad of bots ... So you'd be all alone for a full year and half until they brought them back because of the huge backlash they got from removing them and from making the experience awful.

I played Breakpoint (using a 1€ a month sales rebate thingy Ubisoft offered for the Ubisoft Monthly service letting you play some of their games) I think like 2 or 3 years after its release, it was a decent game once it was fixed with all the updates, if it wasn't for that awful need for staying connected I would even say that it was a good-ish game.

What a shame how a company can destroy games because of their greed.

I've refunded Breakpoint twice (once on Windows then again on Linux, two different machines) because of a massive visual glitch when looking at water. Ubisoft said it was my GPU. Two different GPUs from two different vendors, but sure it's my GPU. I'll stick to Wildlands.

Did you use official Steam Input profile (from game vendors)? Maybe other player create this Steam Input profile?

Naturally, I checked that. It is the official profile, it has been broken for a long time.

Exactly the kind of Quality Assurance you expect from AAA publishers. And releasing a title from 2017 and then charging £41 for the pleasure. Nope.

Removes anti-cheat restrictions to earn a couple redemption points from the Linux community.... only to find out that the game is still busted af because of their stupid launcher and the usual controller support bugs. unfortunately, some things never change.

I love how Ubisoft makes games that run great on Linux but hide them in a Russian nesting doll of barriers that don't.

I installed Wildlands using Lutris with zero issues. Before the EAC removal, the only problem I had was a complete inability to play co-op with my brother because of EAC. After the removal, no problems at all. I'm also running 10 year old hardware (i7-8700, GTX1070).
