While Valve didn't seem to publicly celebrate their 30th anniversary, they did at least go back to some older titles to fix them up. Just Valve doing Valve things.

Over the last day Valve put out updates for some of their more classic shooters - nice to see they don't completely forget about some of their older games. Sure would be fun to see a new modernised version of something like Day of Defeat though.

Day of Defeat: Source

All the changes and the games are noted and linked below:

Half-Life Deathmatch: Source

  • Security and stability improvements.
  • Fixed a bug where certain custom maps would not load assets correctly on Linux.

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

  • Security and stability improvements.
  • Fixed a bug where certain custom maps would not load assets correctly on Linux.
  • Fixed view snapping with .357 (community fix from speedvoltage).

Day of Defeat: Source

  • Security and stability improvements.
  • Fixed incorrect check on Linux servers when setting the winter holiday active (community fix from Irineu).
  • Fixed a bug where certain custom maps would not load assets correctly on Linux .
  • Fixed server skipping maps in the map cycle because ChangeLevel was being called multiple times.

Counter-Strike: Source

  • Security and stability improvements.
  • Fixed client crash related to missing HUDAutoAim element (community fix from flower).
  • Fixed incorrect check on Linux servers when setting the winter holiday active (community fix from Irineu).
  • Fixed a bug where certain custom maps would not load assets correctly on Linux.

Man. I loved the Day of Defeat games. I wish they'd make a new one.

Yeah I spent quite a lot of time playing DoD: Source. I think it was the first Valve game I purchased!

You can try Day of Infamy, a spiritual successor from the Insurgency developers: (External Link: You need to be logged in to view this.)

I think I played more Day of Defeat original than source but loved both.

I did try it. Didn't care for it. Would prefer an actual sequel, even though I know we'll never get it.

How about Half-Life: Source that can't be even played with Proton without heavy diddling?

Nobody plays these anymore. I played a bit of Day of Defeat original/source back in the day. The last time I tried reinstalling DoD:Source (around 10 years ago), I couldn't even find a populated server to play on. CS:Source is pointless with CS2 out, and Half Life deathmatch was never popular, as far as I know. Props to Valve for maintaining their old games... but why? Good for them though, I welcome this behavior.

Thy clearly did this for Linux so the games would work great on Linux aka Steam Deck/Steam Machine.

At least in my case, I play CS:S because i've never liked CS:GO or CS2. I have a regular server that constantly is full and also play zombie mod in some European server that has 64 players constantly

I don't think Valve cares much for Half-Life: Source, anymore. There's a reason they de-listed it, the only way to even get it now is through the Half-Life Deathmatch: Source listing. Is there any reason to play it over the Goldsource original, especially after the 25th anniversary update?

Half-Life: Lemmings works only with Half-Life: Source.
