Despite what Remedy Entertainment said before releasing CONTROL Resonant, it does not run well at all on Steam Deck but will work on other SteamOS systems.

Valve have today given it an Unsupported rating on Steam Deck due to it having poor performance. But thanks to the power of Proton it is actually Verified for the Steam Machine, and SteamOS Compatible overall.

As reported here on GamingOnLinux, previously their official FAQ post stated very clearly the Steam Deck would be supported at launch. Going back just a few days ago, the FAQ still stated that. But, it has now been silently edited to completely remove the Steam Deck mention. Their official announcements of the release and hotfix also make no mention of this status change or about anything on it to come later.

Given that people likely pre-ordered based on their word, this is quite a poor showing from Remedy.

I've reached out to Remedy to see what's happening. Hopefully they have some optimisations planned to make good on their previous statement of supporting the Steam deck.

From the previous press release sent to GamingOnLinux:

“CONTROL Resonant is the result of nearly seven years of true team effort and collaboration that pushes our paranatural action RPG series into an expansive, reality-warping playground of choice, power, and consequence," said Mikael Kasurinen, Creative Director of CONTROL Resonant. “For our new players, you don’t have to know the first game to jump into this sequel. We’ve made this easy to pick up and hard to put down. For our returning fans, we’ve pushed the scale beyond anything we’ve done before, elevating combat, exploration, and storytelling into a bigger, more memorable experience. It’s ambitious, a little wild, thought-provoking and was never easy to create, but easy was never the goal! Now that CONTROL Resonant is here, we can’t wait for our players, both old and new, to get lost in it.”

Can't say I'm too surprised. I don't doubt there's a good configuration to get it running at a consistent 30fps, but obviously having the game detect you're on a Deck and automatically go to a good config would be better.

Can't say any good config would look good, though. Probably would be a blurry mess because of FSR.

it runs like poo, there are frequent drops down to less than 10 fps and frequent 1 second long game freezes. i doubt that any kind of tweaking would make it playable. Remedy lost a loyal customer today who preordered the game based on the steam deck promise that turned out to be a blatant lie. I'll be refunding and leave a negative review. this kind of behaviour from a company is unacceptable.

Remedy sold out with Control to Epic Games, they've been dead to me ever since. I'm not interested in their crap, this (their blatant lying about Steam Deck support and being called out on it) is a win in my opinion.

Little disappointed, but I figure that'll change over time like Jedi: Survivor has. Just might take awhile.

It was an empty promise from the start. Their two previous games, Alan Wake II and FBC Firebreak, were already practically unplayable on Deck, they should have known it wasn't going to work out.

That was a decision made by their publisher, 505 Games (or rather by the owners of 505, Digital Bros), and not by Remedy. Remedy didn't get back the publishing rights to Control until 2025.

For AW2 they had no choice since Epic was the only one willing to fund the development.
