A big day for what was previously an MMO, Dune: Awakening version 1.5 has been released expanding the game to let you play however you want.
You don't have to play with anyone else now, it has a full single-player mode with tons of tweaks to make it worthwhile. But, you can still play with others all the same if you choose to. Nice to have options huh? There's also a lot more settings you can play with to tweak the experience to your liking. You can control sandstorms, security zones (make Hagga Basin fully PvP or fully PvE), harvesting and XP multipliers, building piece limits, item durability, base decay, sandworm and Coriolis auto-spawn, what drops on death, and your maximum land claims and so on.
Some of the changes made for single-player:
- The Exchange now acts as a vendor with a large selection of items you can purchase.
- The Landsraad simulates other guilds to ensure a dynamic and believable Landsraad competition that progresses even without player participation.
- The Coriolis storm is still a very dangerous storm, but it will no longer instantaneously kill the player and wipe the Deep Desert. Players can now keep their progress there.
- The Cartographer skill now extends the playerβs Fog of War reveal radius.
On top of all that, the first part of the story is now actually complete so you can go all the way through it.

There's masses more on top of that. They've re-done the main experience to be centred around your characters directly, not servers. The new main menu presents your characters and lets you take backed-up bases and vehicles with you depending on where you pick to play, but single-player characters are exclusive to single-player which seems fair enough.
Server hosting is also easier than ever with your own PC now able to host a game for up to 40 players.
And, thanks to their work for the console releases, they've made some big optimizations to the game. And lots more can be seen in the announcement. The only downside is cross-play isn't live yet but they said it's coming sometime hopefully soon.

Combat is great, base building is intuitive and mining resources is fun. The only thing letting it down is enemy variety.
Seems fun so far! I was waiting specifically for this single player mode.
Quoting: JarmerPicked it up today and immediately died of thirst while trying to build my first base πCheers, I'll drink to that! oh...sorry. π

I was having a really great time, finished a bunch of missions, maxed out my inventory, found a LOT of really useful stuff for back at base, and then went out driving my sandbike back to my base. My 3 yr old son came and asked me "what are you doing" so I wanted to show him and bam instantly was eaten by a worm and lost every single thing I had and apparently there's no such thing as a "pause" or "save" because of reasons.
Instantly uninstalled, aint nobody got time for this. I spent HOURS gathering those resources, I don't have dad time to re-spend all those hours re-gathering just to maybe get re-eaten again because *gasp* my son wants to talk to me. Insane.
Quoting: JarmerFinal follow up: Sadly I'm done with the game: uninstalled never to play again. Don't recommend for fellow dad gamers or anyone on earth who values such a thing as "time" or "a life".Wait so there's no concept of a stash where you can save your loot?!

Quoting: d3Xt3ryes there's a home base, and as long as you don't build in the open sand, it's safe from the worms. And you can store all your stuff there. But there's no fast travel, and the game encourages you to build multiple bases. So the only way to get all my rare items from my first base to second base was to haul it there in a bike. And when my son asked what I was doing, I wanted to show him, and because my bike stood still, it was eaten by a worm which permanently destroys everything and there's no such thing as a save to go back to.Quoting: JarmerFinal follow up: Sadly I'm done with the game: uninstalled never to play again.
