Another Nintendo game has a new unofficial PC port with PaperBoat from Harbour Masters for Paper Mario 64.

In their Discord announcement said:
"It is with great pride that we announce the release of PaperBoat, our Paper Mario 64 port based on the PaperMario-DX decomp project. Our goal with this project is to provide the means to easily port existing texture packs as well as create new mods and experiences.
We are excited to continue working on this effort, our menus are light at this time but I'm sure folks will have ideas of things to add that will bring the quality of life enhancements that the community has grown to expect."
Before you get too excited though; if AI use is something you feel strongly about, you might want to look away from Harbour Masters. As popular as their ports are for various retro Nintendo games, they appear to be using generative AI quite a lot (from PCGamingWiki). Like a growing number of open source releases on GitHub, they appear to be using Claude and Copilot.
They have an AI Policy and all that notes "Harbour Masters is not an Anti AI organization, however, we are Anti Slop".
There was another project with Paper Mario ReCut, but it doesn't seem to see active development.

edit: it's being discussed on the PCGW Discord, unclear what action will be taken. Impossible to blanket ban everything AI, I guess we'll see...

Furthermore, the systematic and thoughtless rejection of any program coded with AI is absurd. These people will be overtaken by progress, and the world will continue its course.
As for Paper Mario with PaperBoat, it just needs an HD texture pack to be perfect!

Quoting: legluondunetThe problem isn't using AI for coding; the problem is using it incorrectly and without understanding the code. There are a number of schools of thought on that, I don't think it's a blanket claim you can just make on the assumption that nobody has a different opinion after thinking about it.

Besides, the dismissal of anything coded with AI by some people, without any reflection, is ridiculous. These people will be left behind by progress, and the train will continue on its way.
Regarding Paper Mario with PaperBoat, all it needs is an HD texture pack and it will be perfect!
The purpose of AI development is to develop a tool people will rely on, but no competitor can ever hope to approach, so you get the perfect form of vendor lockin.
This is, why they throw, so much money at it. Every dollar thrown deepens the moat as long it improves performance even just a little bit, because nobody else can pay that dollar.
They could be wrong, maybe it doesn't hold that level of moat. This is, why their stock value crashes everytime the Chinese release a model, they're basically the definition of a competitor, but currently the market still believes they could be right, as such their stock is still climbing.
Now the original repo has been archived after the manual has been changed to a long explanation of the situation.

TLDR: A hostile takeover has happened to the 2ship repo by people who have had either very little or no involvement with the project since its inception. I (ProxySaw) am no longer involved.Last edited by Klaas on 19 Sep 2026 at 3:31 pm UTC
(…)I had several people come out making threats and demands that in the context of open source projects (with CC0 license) just don’t make any sense, including threats of abusing the DMCA, meaning because they were offended by my actions they were willing to kill the project, showing their true colors. The strangest thing is, none of these people were involved with 2ship even remotely. Then what transpired was I was banned from the HM64 discord, they reinstated the original Github, breaking all links back to this now transferred repo, and have handed the maintainer privileges to 2 people who have never been involved with this project.(…)
