Update - 30/09/2026 - 14:52 UTC - It's being worked on officially by the developer now.
Original article below:
Minecraft Dungeons II is about to release today and while the first game works, it currently appears that there's issues running the sequel on SteamOS / Linux.
From what we've been told it requires Microsoft Game Services, which fails with Valve's Proton compatibility layer leading to a black screen. From what I understand, Microsoft Game Services is heavily tied to the Microsoft Store on Windows - so it's perhaps quite unsurprising it doesn't work. That said, hopefully this is something Valve will be able to sort in a future Proton update.
When queried about it on Bluesky, Mojang developer Marc Watson said:
"I don't believe we've said anything about supporting that platform. This isn't a casual checking out kind of situation, picking or adding platforms is a massive undertaking and chosen intentionally based on a combination of priorities, opportunity, and team bandwidth."
Update 11:48 UTC - Watson has now deleted that post. With a follow up reply to another:
"Removing my post because I have nothing to do with platform choice, it's not even remotely related to any work that I do."
Bit of a woops there then.
There is also a bug report on the official Proton GitHub, with people trying to work through it.
We have reached out to Mojang / Microsoft to clarify.

picking or adding platforms is a massive undertakingChoosing to support PS5 or Switch is an undertaking. Supporting Linux takes ZERO effort for games that already work on Windows. It only takes effort if you INTENTIONALLY decide to screw over Linux users.
chosen intentionally based on a combination of priorities, opportunity, and team bandwidthPriorities in this case would be adding MS spyware and screwing Linux users (because Linux is a threat). That's what the team bandwidth was used for. And just to be clear: this took MORE bandwidth than simply releasing a normal Windows game, which would've worked on Linux by default.
Maybe that's microslob's strategy here?
Hopefully the Microsoft Gaming Services stub DLL can make it to Wine, or at least wine tricks/proton.
You need to run it with GDK-Proton11-7, and theres a github page that replaces the xgameruntime.dll and adds xauth.py, so when you launch the game rather than the windows sign in it gives you a microsoft link code as if you were signing in on a console. After that I was able to play perfectly even multiplayer with my friend on windows.
Still sucks that you have to do that, It still sucks that we have to do this, I'm hoping it changes in the future for less tech-savvy players or even steam deck players. But at least it does work.
