Another smaller but great sounding upgrade for Proton Experimental to run more Windows games smoothly on SteamOS / Linux is here.
It's been a really busy weekend for Valve it seems. We've had SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta for all devices, a Steam Client Beta update, and SteamOS 0.4.1 Beta for Steam Frame too.
What exactly is Proton Experimental? A brief reminder for you - Proton Experimental is a compatibility layer to run Windows games on Linux systems like Steam Machine, Steam Deck and Desktop Linux. This one is like their testing ground for future stable numbered version Proton update, the most recent being Proton 11.0-2.
You can install any version of Proton by just searching for "Proton" in your Steam Library. Check out the GamingOnLinux Guide to all the different Proton versions if you're confused.
- Fixed a Proton Experimental regression that made CEG-protected games unplayable.
- Fixed Crysis and Crysis Wars not being playable with some newer AMD CPUs that support CPUID faulting.
- Fixed rendering corruption in Return to Krondor.
- Fixed Japanese text rendering in Killer7.
- Fixed Hide and Moo! showing error when quitting the game.
- Added early support for 32bit OpenXR (requires
PROTON_USE_WOW64=1on x86).
There was another update to Proton Experimental less than a week ago with even more improvements.
But this time, this time at last! it worked on Experimental. It's going to be a nice day.
Time to replay one of my favorites 🥳
