Scrolling back through the ever-growing catalogue of games releasing on Steam all the time to find some quirky games, I set a few limits here: Native Linux support, no generative AI notice, at least 10 user reviews but no more than 100 user reviews - in the hope to find something you perhaps missed recently.

What really struck me while doing this is just how many games are being released on Steam all the time.

With 2026 looking like it could easily be the biggest year on record for the number of games released on Steam (SteamDB shows 23,963 games for 2026), it really highlights just how difficult getting noticed has become. New releases are continually pouring onto the store, all of them competing for the same limited amount of attention available from players.

The sheer volume is staggering. It really puts it into perspective just how tough developers have it right now. That applies to everyone, from solo developers and smaller indie teams to studios with considerably larger budgets. Making a good game is only part of the battle. You then have to convince people to notice it among thousands of other games all trying to do exactly the same thing.

There's undoubtedly plenty of games released that barely find an audience at all, regardless of their quality. With Steam continuing to grow and the number of releases showing little sign of slowing down, simply being seen is becoming one of the biggest challenges developers face. Although, according to Valve directly, the amount of developers seeing success is also growing.

Anyway, that's it for this little round-up. Be sure to keep checking back on GamingOnLinux for more quick news tips, reviews, editorials, fun lists and so on!

And how to get me to notice your game among thousands of others?

An intersection between Native Linux and meaningful-effort graphics (basically, not 2D pixel art. good lord we have enough of those already).

For example, recent games like Active Matter 🫡

In my humble opinion, e.g. Owlboy was meaningful-effort 2D pixel art graphics.

(I would even think that nowadays pixel art is more work than 3D graphics.)

Love these new articles Liam!!! I do have one minor request: For all the game listings, under review score and release date can you please put "Genre - xxxxxxx" so like "2d metroidvania" or "isometric rpg" ... or whatever it may be. That helps a ton!

Otherwise, love everything about these posts and keep em coming :)

Looking through this list, I like Stop and Smell the Flowers, and Lowmoor (especially love the win95 aesthetic!!! lol)

I have played Lowmoor Idle RPG: An Adventurer's Chronicle (External Link: You need to be logged in to view this.) for a number of hours. Lowmoor is also available on itch.io (External Link: You need to be logged in to view this.) as a browser game. As mentioned, the game is free to play. The game play is described as "zero player idle", which means you basically sit and watch the "Win9x" interface create a RPG progression of events. I found the ever-changing sequence of combat encounters, character dialog, loot gathering and selling mesmerizing, but I am easily amused. There are also 100 achievements available for achievement hunters, although "Steam is learning about this game". The dialog generated by the game is not perfect, always understandable English and the "Win9x" interface is anything but modern, but it is very functional. On Steam, it is a small download, loads quickly and is free. I would say it is worth a quick spin for anyone that enjoys idle games.

Up until now I had never heard of idle games.
I tried Hocus Focus and it feels like just the perfect idle game for me.
Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention 💚

Bad Pixels seems like a game we actually could've gotten back then, if games like this would've been able to run with more than 5 FPS
