Valve today finally announced the price of their new VR kit the Steam Frame with SteamOS Linux, and it's actually not as bad as I expected.
Here's the pricing, which Valve said in a press email is "inclusive of VAT where applicable":
- Steam Frame 256GB: 1,059 USD / 1,529 CAD / 1,049 EUR / 889 GBP / 1,609 AUD / 4,539 PLN
- Steam Frame 1TB: 1,299 USD / 1,859 CAD / 1,279 EUR / 1,089 GBP / 1,969 AUD / 5,549 PLN
I was bracing myself for over £1K for even the most basic version. It's still a lot of money but all hardware is expensive now, sadly.
The Steam Frame includes a copy of Half-Life: Alyx with all purchases and ships directly from Valve in the U.S., Canada, UK, EU, and Australia. As for Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong - Valve said to expect an announcement from KOMODO at around 10:00 AM on the 15th JST. It does not include a power supply, so bring your own charger.
Much like with the Steam Machine - it's a lottery system. You sign up to potentially get access to purchase it. You can join the list up until Thursday - September 17, 2026 5:00 PM UTC. The list is then closed and randomized, and Valve said you will receive an email with your results within a day. So you'll know hopefully by the weekend if you can get one or not. Just like with the Steam Machine, you either get the ability to purchase one or get put into the waiting list for when one becomes available sometime later (weeks or months). You should get 72 hours to complete the purchase if you're on the list, otherwise it then rolls over to someone else.

Valve did not reply to GamingOnLinux for review hardware. They didn't for the Steam Machine either despite us reviewing the Steam Deck (both models) so much like with the Steam Machine, we'll be buying one to continue covering Linux gaming. Be sure to check out our Support Us page on how to help.
I'll reserve any real thoughts of course until I can get my hands on it - but it could really change things for the VR world. A true headset you actually own, and can do anything with - and a full Linux desktop on it too. Very cool. I look forward to removing my Index Base Stations, and not being attached by a wire is going to be so much nicer.
Leave a comment and let us know if you're going to attempt to grab one. And what your thoughts are on the pricing.

The lottery system is a good choice, but sadly you we can only sign up for one version this time. With the Steam Machine you could sign up for all four. It wasn't implemented perfect then, but I'd rather have seen them improve on it than scrap the option.
Another thing: It says on the description:
Stream from your PC, laptop, Steam Deck or (coming soon!) Steam Machine...How come you can stream from the Deck, but not from the Machine?

Can we be sure it will work for Linux in the future? near future?
I put myself on the list. But I want to stream from by Gaming PC and not run the games on the Frame.
Has anyone found some more info regarding streaming from Linux?

I'm trying to get the 256 model to replace my well used Quest 2, it's annoying to have instagram and facebook constantly begging for my login info when I'm exclusively playing PC VR games. It would also be nice to play beatsaber natively(not streamed) for the first time in years since my first headset an acer Windows MX headset that I returned after a few weeks cause yikes those were bad.
Ouff... I think, I will pass.
And despite the obvious difficulty and even ridiculous way i gotta go out of my way to get this and considering the high price ... I Still will get this over having a Meta device period.
I'm personally not a VR person though, so I'll most likely skip this and continue to wait for my turn on the Steam Machine wait list ⏰
I'd be curious about how far the VR
But I think I'll pass, for now.
I've been pretty gloomed out on most everything recently regarding hardware and gaming in general, I really hope this hold its promises.

I was fully on board buying a Steam Machine when it launched, despite the high price.
I failed to secure one at launch and am on the “wait list”. I’m still waiting and It’s kind of left me miffed.
As much as I was excited for the Frame to finally dip my toes into VR for the first time… I don’t want to jump through the hoops.
I’m likely to just completely pass on it at this point.
