⨯ Check out what anti-cheat enabled games work on Linux / SteamOS on our dedicated anti-cheat compatibility page.

I do have to hand it to the Linux Mint team - they do a lot of good work overall and now they're expanding the XApp project.

For those not up to speed - the XApp Project is about making applications for regular users that work across different desktop environments and distributions. While some desktop environments make their own dedicated apps that don't work well or look right on other desktops, the XApp Project is trying to change that.

Announced in the September 2026 blog post, the Linux Mint team noted the brand new website for the XApp Project and it does look quite nice. Lays it all out simply and makes the idea easy to understand by giving an overview of all the different applications maintained by them.

With this news they've also introduced multiple new applications including a calendar app called Clockenstein:

Clockenstein

Xepub which is a new EPUB reader:

Xepub

And, on top of that, the document sorting tool Thingy went through a redesign:

Thingy

Check out their funding page again - it seems things have been relatively stable across the last few months. With July seeing $15,693 donated and August saw $14,807.

I think this is a great project, and I'm glad for the work being done on it. I do think the branding is pretty terrible though, which might be a problem. From first glance, I think it's one of two things:

1) dedicated to the dying linux display server
2) somehow integrated with a nazi social network

1) You don't really follow the project
2) What the blazes is that?

Yes, 1 is correct, that's why Jarmer is pointing it out. 2 is a reference to well-known Nazi salute thrower Elon Musk's rename of Twitter to X, which was also the name of the online bank he used to work on because the drugs really did a number on his mental faculties.

Nope guys you are obviously uninformed.
Mint is not dedicated to x11, is dedicated to stability.
When wayland became viable and this didn't happen a long time ago, Clem 'n' co started working on it,
and as far as Mint team says Wayland is going to be ready for use with Cinnamon and (almost) on par with x11
when Mint 23 comes out next Winter.
There is no dedication to x11 as opposed to lack of it regarding wayland.
It is all there, on Linux Mint blog.

It is obvious that this "nazi" social media is still one of the most popular networks with millions of users.
And I doubt all these millions are nazis. Some respectable organizations, the opposite of nazism, have kept their accounts.
On Mint official sites you can even see the old twitter logos, that means Mint owner didn't bother at all.

I know a good place for this superficial caricatures:

"1) dedicated to the dying linux display server
2) somehow integrated with a nazi social network"

Hopefully gtk4 or adwaita, or whatever that Gnome UI library is allows to change the placement of buttons, because buttons like "ok" and "save" on top of the window is the dumbest UX decision ever made.

Also client side window decorations without theme support are ugly. Really what are those tiny close buttons on the fat titlebar?

And who needs another epub reader? We already have a dozen of them. What's the point of open source if you don't pick existing code to improve it.

It cannot be that you guys are associating anything that gets named with X to Elon Musk to Nazis... I'm probably missing something else.

Are we really arguing that XApp doesn't sound like an application related to X11 or Twitter?? X... App. An App for X?

It's a bad name. But a cool project. Kinda like GIMP.

Okay, nowhere near as bad as GIMP. πŸ˜†

But still weirdly/slightly misleading given that things like XWayland exist. And twitter (now just "X"). And no, Pyrate, no-one is conflating the letter X with Nazis. It just so happens that Elon appears to be one and he names nearly all of his projects with an X in the name or just the letter X, hence (part of) the confusion about this project, XApp.

Thats basically what I meant, and this genuinely feels extraordinarily outlandish in my opinion. Like, I guess I can't watch my favourite TV show anymore because of it now..

Hmm... I may have taken Jarmer's comment a bit... wrong πŸ€”
They don't like x in xapp, it should rather be something like "wapp" 🀬

How about CDA for Cross-Desktop/Distro Applications? Or UA for Universal Applications? Or they could take some meaningful word from a non-English language, like Domhan (Scottish Gaelic for universe) or Jamii (Swahili for community).

I honestly never made the connection. Maybe because X is such a generic name and most people still call it Twitter.

It looks like XApps was started in 2016. (External Link: You need to be logged in to view this.) It's unfortunate that a chud changing a social media company name to something that is so commonly used retroactively adds a taint to existing projects.

X is a popular name, since before the birth of our nazistic overlord (pre/suf)fix in technical naming, because it often stands for eXtended and especially in open source circles, but basically in any version of technology people tend to improve on what exists.
XML, XHTML, XAAS, REX, XMPP, IEEE 802.1X, XFAT, XBUS, ITX, XMP, ATX and XFS.

I thought "XApp" referred to "Cross App", like "X" referring to cross just like with "XDG" - Cross Desktop.
