‘VULKAN’ Could Possibly Be The Official Name Of The OpenGL Successor

It seems a recent trademark request from 'The Khronos Group Inc.' includes a new API named ‘VULKAN’.

You can see the full listing here, and it is described as this:
QuoteComputer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of creating, rendering, and displaying 2D and 3D computer graphics; computer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of accessing parallel computing resources; downloadable specifications for the aforementioned goods

Not the best timing considering our beloved actor Leonard Nimoy recently passed away, who was known for being a 'Vulcan' named Spock (amongst many other things). It would have been nice if it was a tribute, but it was filed before the reports of his passing.

A name doesn't mean all that much, so we will hopefully see some demonstrations of it next week at GDC. If this is the new official name, I approve. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I directly address this in the article if you read it:

In my opinion, the "Vulkan" name insinuates that this API has a link with "Mantle". It's related to lava, volcanoes...

"Vulkan" means "Volcano" in German. Will this OpenGL successor erupt upon the masses in a fiery storm of success, pushing gaming on Linux to new heights?

Waiting for the tech-savvy crowd telling you this will only be true if it buries AMD deep under the ashes.

Considering how AMDs Mantle API is exclusive to their own GPUs... I don't think that glNext/Vulkan needs to compete with them directly.
It's really more of a competition against DirectX 12.

You meant "tech-savvy" aka "fanbois". AMD did much and more to the gaming community. ;)

But ya, it would be great if we only had nvidia and intel... oh wait, we're gamers, so only nvidia, right?
A monopoly, what could possibly go wrong?

Just in case you don't know, one can play with AMD (and their _open source_ drivers) such fine. In fact that's what I'm doing since years and since a year exclusively on Linux :p

In fact mantle was not designed to be exclusively for AMD (in contrary to physx and other stuff that is either not available on other hardware or gimped). It's just that nvidia stated they don't see a benefit for them supporting it and hence ditched it.

That's a good point! Maybe they did use the Mantle source code in the end then.
