The massive 7 Days to Die update Alpha 17 is live now for everyone

By - | Views: 11,861

Just before our holiday break, The Fun Pimps released a whopper of an update to their survival game 7 Days to Die.

Alpha 17 is a complete overhaul to many systems in the game, the amount of changes that came with the update is truly ridiculous. So large, to list it all here would be madness. You can find the full update notes here.

Some highlights of what's changed:

  • Updated Unity version: New lighting features, ambient lighting, more reflections
  • A new party system to share XP, share quests and more
  • A new quest system
  • The Navezgane map is much bigger with many more locations
  • An overhauled vehicle system with new vehicles including a Gyrocopter
  • Overhauled enemy AI
  • New animals

And the list just keeps going on for a while. It's been some time since the last major alpha, so if you haven't played for a while it will be totally different.

7 Days to Die certainly looks a lot better with this update, it's a little harder too. My main wish is for them to do a serious performance pass on it, as it doesn't perform all that well for me and my hardware is pretty decent. Even so, I've been able to enjoy quite a bit of it. Since the big update, I've found it to be a much more rewarding game overall. I'm quite astonished with just how much there is you can do in the game, time just washes away like nothing whilst playing it. I heard from our streamer Sin that it's a much more interesting game to play now, so there's that too.

Find it on Humble Store and Steam (64% off).

Yep, it's a real performance hog now. I've pushed a few settings down a notch or two and I'm still lucky to hit 50fps, despite my monster graphics card. Hopefully now that it's stable, they'll focus on that performance issue - A16 was very fast by comparison.

But what a game. The melee is finally satisfying. When you power attack with an Iron Sledge, the zombies will literally fly away from you, ragdolling and tumbling through the air - it's great.

And the skill system is great too. With the latest re-balance the forge is much more achievable. I was pretty disappointed with the bike though - it's not much faster than walking unless you use stamina to speed it up, and when you do, you're lucky to last 30 seconds before it's gone and you're back to walking pace. Hopefully that gets a tweak or two in future.

Great game. Loving it all over again.

Did the AI changed from the previous A17 experimental build to this release? Because if not, it is one of the most stupid AI I've ever seen. It completely breaks the immersion to me. And when I mean stupid, I'm not saying they are easy, on the contrary, they will hunt you down wherever you are, just ripping concrete blocks straight to you. Lost the hope on this one. Unless you are a builder and turn off zombies totally, they took out the (little) fun it once had.

On a bright side, the vehicles are great and the performance in general is better, the perk system was a good idea (with terrible implementation ), but that's all.

I'll try it out again if GoL makes a server. I didn't like it when I played it for a few hours about a year ago.

Huh, when I played it last (admittedly years ago) it ran quite well. I should try it out on my 2080.

So, for the record, the game seems to run about the same on my P3200 Quadro as it does on my 2080 GTX (that is to say not all that great).

I did set up a server, though I still need to open ports for people to be able to play on it, and figure out a way to make sure it starts up automatically if I restart the computer it's on.

But I also probably don't have the proper bandwidth for more than a few players at a time.

Also of note. I got my ass kicked many, many times....
