Steam Play Proton 5.0-5 is out with updated OpenVR, Vulkan and fixes

By - | Views: 19,294

Valve published Proton 5.0-5 for Steam Play which includes some helpful additions and bug fixes, should help you play those Windows-only games while quarantined.

Quite a small release overall, here's what's changed:

  • Fix crash in some games introduced in Proton 5.0-4.
  • Fix networking error in Granblue Fantasy: Versus.
  • Support for latest OpenVR SDKs.
  • Add support for new Vulkan extensions used by some recent titles.

You can see the full Proton changelog on GitHub. Doing a little of my own testing with it this morning, it all seems to be working quite well.

Like the HUD used in the above shot? That's the excellent Linux gaming overlay, MangoHud, you can see it in action in our latest article on it. Certainly makes keeping an eye on performance a lot easier.

Honestly it's probably less cost and effort to just release a native Linux port of Doom Eternal as they pretty much have that already. Silly id/beth though.

How can no effort beat effort ? Beth dont want to port to linux so free ports via proton beat no expense whatsoever that way you get even more people buying your game.

No effort for iD means effort for the Proton team and vice versa.

If it is anything like DOOM (2016), then we'll probably have to wait some weeks for the DRM to be cracked and hopefully id patching it out.

To be honest though, I don't know anything about the situation of the new title.

It's really come a long way. All of the Tales of games seem to work now.

Bethesda accidentally shipped DOOM Eternal together with an executable that did not have the Denuvo DRM protection, so they already did the job themselves. So at this point, they might just as well officially remove the DRM :D

Seems that DOOM Eternal can run using latest Proton GE: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.4-GE-2

This release still does not fix the regression introduced with Proton 5.0.x preventing Skyrim from launching in windowed mode. Bug reported, but no answer. :-(

Apparently no bethesda released the game without any DRM by mistake and its floating about on many file sharing platforms no crack required because the exe has no protection. Obv you cant play mp (the drm was patched in today) and it wont get updated but yeah the point release version is avilable sans DRM that version probably will run just fine on proton.
