BLENDO Games have today put three more of their previous titles up on GitHub as open source. These are Quadrilateral Cowboy, Thirty Flights of Loving and Gravity Bone.

This follows the same path they went with Flotilla back in February, although this time it's a little different. These three are under the GPL v2/3 rather than the zlib license, which would be because each of these actually use some form of open source game engine release from id Software (Quake or Doom engines). Each had the source available before from Blendo's own website but putting it on GitHub now makes them far more accessible and I bet plenty didn't even know any of it was open source previously.

Each game still requires you own them for the rest of the assets like art and audio, as the open source releases only cover the normal source code.

You can see each on GitHub below:

It's a nice win for game preservation since GitHub is easy to use and search through. Something I wished more developers did with their older titles.

I wish more developers did that instead of just abandoning their games. They are still monetized, because you need to buy the assets, while also allowing bugfixes, ports, mods, and all sorts of improvements by the community. It's an absolute win-win.

Problem is that a lot of developers overestimate just how much others want to rip off their perfect beautiful code. While in reality the code is often very purpose-built, and not that reusable at all. Falling in love with your own code is a real cultural problem that I often have to deal with at work.

I think it's worth mentioning that Quadrilateral Cowboy is part of the itch.io bundle so there's an easy way to get the missing parts ... at least for another 9 hours.
