Trese Brothers have announced that their fantastic space exploration RPG Star Traders: Frontiers is getting modding support, three years after the original release.

As what looks like their most popular PC release, Star Traders: Frontiers had ended up with a bit of a following and a Very Positive overall rating on Steam from over 2.5K people. Over the years they've released something in the region of 250 free upgrades both small and some huge adding lots of new features.

With the modding support announcement, the brothers mentioned: "We reached a point in Star Traders’ development where we could zoom out and consider larger-scope changes to the game," said Andrew Trese, Co-founder and Creative Director. "Players’ feedback and ideas have always been a deep pool for us to draw from, and the game’s momentum is still going so strong years after release. Adding mod support seems like a natural expansion."

This is what they're going for initially for modding:

  1. A basic save-game editor all players will be able to use to customize their personal playthroughs.
  2. Steam Workshop tools for uploading & downloading mods, and a separately-installed moddable build of the game.
  3. Officially-supported access & documentation to the game database for mod creation.

"We’ve always loved the idea of adding mod support to our games," said Cory Trese, Co-Founder and Technical Director. "Star Traders has the playerbase, the depth, and I think an agelessness that will really make it worth the investment."

They will be making a private group later in the year for people interested to join in, so modders can get early access to their tools. Keep an eye on their Steam page for more on when that arrives.

You can pick up Star Traders: Frontiers on Steam.

Trese Brothers are also working on Cyber Knights: Flashpoint, a tactical RPG in an original cyberpunk setting ten years in the making that seems a bit XCOM-like.
