Proton 6.3-8 gets a first Release Candidate, lots of games working on Linux

By - | Views: 30,321

A fresh Proton release is coming up with Proton 6.3-8 now seeing a Release Candidate ready for more people to test and report issues on. Unsure what Steam Play and Proton are? See our beginner's guide for more if you're unclear.

Pulling in lots of fixes from previous releases of Proton Experimental, we're about to see a nice bump in the main release branch with this. It's a big one too, since this also brings with it support for selected BattlEye games (as previously announced), CEG DRM compatibility improvements, NVIDIA DLSS support for DX11 and DX12 games (guarded by PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 and dxgi.nvapiHack = False) and support for the latest Steamworks SDK.

Here's the Windows games you can expect to be newly playable with it:

  • Age of Empires 4
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Breath of Death VI
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  • DEATHLOOP
  • Disgaea 4 Complete+
  • Eve Online
  • FIA European Truck Racing Championship
  • Fly'n
  • Game Dev Tycoon
  • Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered
  • GreedFall
  • Mafia II (Classic)
  • Magicka
  • Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy (AMD GPUs only)
  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition
  • Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
  • Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
  • Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slicked Precipice of Darkness 3
  • RiMS Racing
  • The Riftbreaker
  • Sol Survivor
  • TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge
  • TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2

There's also various bug fixes and improvements for a few specific games like Satisfactory, Project CARS 3 and there's updates for DXVK, VKD3D-PROTON and Wine-Mono.

How to try it?

  • Search for Proton 6.3 in Steam
  • Right click on Proton 6.3 and select Properties -> Betas
  • Select "proton-6.3-8-rc" from the dropdown and let it update.

Not sure if you already mentioned it but Planetside 2 seems to work with Proton Experimental and the Proton BattlEye Runtime installed!

Which is not supported by Valve or the developer. The same happened with R6 Siege, and then it stopped working. Until Valve / the dev confirm, I just wouldn't risk it.

Nah, it has been working for over a day already. And it only works with BattlEye runtime installed.

hmm... assassin's creed (at least odyssey and origins) worked before, already with 5.something ...
i already have mass effect legendary running on proton experimental for a while now and it seems to work quite (a little bit stuttering on start, but after a few minutes it runs good), but i haven't progressed a lot into the game yet (3hrs only), but mass effect andremoda became unplayable after a while; started at about 20hrs playtime that sometimes (rarely) the game turned into a slideshow, and now - after 20 hours more - i came to a point where, when i start a conversation or try to navigate somewhere or do anything else but walking around the ship, it just turns into a slideshow.... i really hope that doesn't happen with legendary too..

It works for me with Proton Experimental, however, I think I added Media Foundation workaround (back before then, a few months after the game was released), so I am not sure about a fresh install experience.

black ops ii only has campaign playable atm. multiplayer and zombies work for about 15 seconds before an unhandled exception occurs. campaign works well though.

multiplayer and zombies can be played by installing steam in wine (6.21 or newer needed)
