This is terrible news for my free time, as if I didn't have enough to play in bed. Terraria has a new patch out to make it even better on the Steam Deck.
From the announcement: "As we have mentioned over the past few months, the team has been hard at work on an update to further optimize Terraria for Steam Deck play - inclusive of performance and controls. With the Steam Deck officially shipping out to players starting today, we are pleased to be able to push this update out to everyone just in time!"
What can you expect from it? The developer noted that in their own testing they saw "between 3.5 and 5.5 hours of playtime between charges" which is actually pretty darn good compared to some of the numbers I saw from various other games in my initial review. Of course timing depends on what is going on, as games like Terraria are vastly different from one moment to the next.
For the Steam Deck, I can confirm by default it's using the Native Linux build.
In my own testing today, I would say the developer clearly has more work to do though. I did notice some freezing and stuttering, which seemed like when it was loading in new parts of the world and it did interrupt gameplay quite a bit. Once done though, it was really good and feels amazing with Deck controls. If they can fix the freezing on those parts, it would probably become a Deck favourite.
This update also includes numerous balances changes and bug fixes, along with having the virtual keyboard appear for IP/password entry and other Multiplayer text entry menus.
